Yes, that’s exactly it, Tatiana. I think it’s one of those names you have to say ‘in French’ IYKWIM. I’m not sure I’d use it in the UK. I think the different pronunciation would get tiresome quite quickly.

The perfume advert with Kate Moss in sounds like Anayse to me. If I encountered an Anais in real life I would try to avoid having to say it out loud.

Jesslequest · 04/08/2019 22:42

My daughter is named Anais, after my husbands french grandmother Claudette Anais. We pronounce it An ay !!! As did she !! ( think I’ll take her word for the pronunciation, although I have heard different versions.)
To be fair I haven’t encountered many people that have had a problem pronouncing her name , although most people assume wrongly she’s named after the perfume Anais Anais ( pronounced an ay , an ay ) but at least they say it as we do.
We obviously think it’s the most beautiful name in the world.

Sorry, I think you are backtracking as you mispronounced it, as seen above!

?? Have you read the thread?

An-aye-ees, but if you've got an english accent you can get away with Anayss

Well yes. I refer you to my posts, which unsurprisingly I’ve read.

All the ones I know are Ann eye ees

TatianaLarina · 04/08/2019 23:29

I spoke French before I spoke English. I analysed the nuance of the pronunciation as far as I can. If you want to be a tit about it, that’s up to you.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's Ann-eye-eese. I reckon you can pronounce it the other ways too though?

Sagradafamiliar · 05/08/2019 00:11

I did agree with Tatiana on the 'naïve' example tbf and tried to elaborate on it.
I think it's just difficult to put across in the written form, how it should be pronounced in English when in my head, I'm hearing it in French.

Naïve is pronounced Na-eev, N-eye-eev is the anglicised way
Anaïs is therefore Anna-ees (emphasis on 's')

Exactly.

It’s hard to render the precise French pronunciation in English. I don’t agree that the English pronunciation of Anna + ees matches, for the reasons I gave.

TatianaLarina · 05/08/2019 14:29

Not sure why you’re so determined to tell a native French speaker that they can’t pronounce their own language Josepheen

Branleuse · 05/08/2019 14:33

Fwiw its one of my dc names and she doesnt give a shit if people dont pronounce it exactly right, and answers to all sorts of weird pronounciatios such as Anayy or anneece. Choosing a french name, i guess it was to be expected.
