What is THE pronunciation of Anaïs?

I watched that documentary 'Twinsters' about the identical twins separated at birth. One of them was French and named Anaïs. She pronounced it An-eye-ees

I understand that people don’t speak French. But we do have familiar English words with a diaeresis.

Naïve. (Also Noël, Brontë, Zoë, Chloë). So you get a rough idea of what the dots do no?

Why is there even a question about the pronunciation? It's pronounced as it's written:
An a ïs (Anna ees).

I don't see any other way

So is it Anna-ees or Ann-eye-ees ? I love both

An eye ees is the correct way not Anna ees. Think of naïve.

In reality there’s very little between the two because the French a is pronounced differently.

I’d say it’s a sort of mixture between the two. I don’t think it’s a particularly natural sound for native English speakers. Partly because we’re a bit ‘lazy’with vowels like the second ‘a’ in Anna.

Surely it depends on how the parents pronounce it? I know two - one pronounces it the way I remember it from the perfume adverts, An-eye-eess whereas the other pronounces it An-ay.

I dunno..Anaïs is like Anna-eess and naïve is like na-eev
They are quite similar thanks to the distinctive sounding 'ï'

The French ‘a’ sound is more open than the English ‘a’ which sounds more like er. When you say an open French a followed by ees it produces the slight ‘eye’ sound.

If you say Anna ees with an English accent it sounds like Anner ees, (without pronouncing the r) which doesn’t have enough lift on the middle syllable.

I would say An-ay-ees.

But DS1 goes to school with one who is pronounced An-ay.

I don't know why anyone would say anner-ees when it does need to be anna-ees. With the 'anna' being very precise: 'A-na'. Being French I was just trying to find a way to explain it, Im always being schooled in my own language on these threads.

The British ‘a’ in Anna is pronounced er or uh. The French is more aa or ah (but not ‘are).
