Less than half (45%) of babies had a name within the top 100 lists in 2018, down from two thirds (67%) in 1996

I thought this was an interesting statistic too.

Poetryinaction · 29/08/2019 10:41

The list isn't there is it? Just the data.

@Poetryinaction yeah I can only see the statistics too. Last BBC released an article with a search bar and you could type in any name and it would tell you how many were given the name and its ranking position. I'm hoping they'll do the same this year!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 29/08/2019 11:07

It’s definitely all there. Try clearing your cache.

Can you see it now? I am surprised how popular Hunter is.

WaterSheep · 29/08/2019 11:17

I'm surprised by some of the girls names, particularly Maryam and Aurora being so high. I've worked with a lot of children and have never encountered either name.

Also interesting to me at least, of the top 100 girls names 40 of them end in the letter A

Colourfulest · 29/08/2019 11:20

I know quite a few Aurora's.

I can't see any names outside the top 100...

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 29/08/2019 11:27

Maryam is an Islamic name and popular in the Muslim community. Aurora has been climbing steadily for a few years.

FantasticPhyllis · 29/08/2019 11:29

@50Colourfulest you can use www.darkgreener

Download this years stats and go to table 6.

2 hours later I've finally figured out there's only 4 with my daughter's name born in 2018 (including her) Grin

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 29/08/2019 11:35

Wow, darkgreener has been updated already. That was quick!

WaterSheep · 29/08/2019 11:38

Wow that's impressive.

Colourfulest · 29/08/2019 12:15

Darkgreener is still showing my dd's name as last years ranking position... It says 2018 but its wrong.

Jessi88 · 29/08/2019 12:55

Rethinking Florence for DD2 now. I’ve never met one so didn’t think it would be that popular!

Colourfulest · 29/08/2019 14:00

@AuntieStella

There were 170 girl Aubrey's only 44 boy Aubrey's so it's actually very much a girls name now in the UK.

Colourfulest · 29/08/2019 14:03

Plus another 133 Aubrey's!

Colourfulest · 29/08/2019 14:04

Ugh, I meant Aubree's

Poetryinaction · 29/08/2019 15:12

Ah yes thank you. A little disappointed my dd name appears to have dropped out of the top 100. I thought it was more well liked.

We were right about Theo. If you add the Theo and the Theodores it is no.3 I think.

mum2jakie · 29/08/2019 20:48

@Anni3getyourgun you were right about the popularity of Grayson! I've never come across one in my neck of the woods!

Anni3getyourgun · 29/08/2019 20:53

@mum2jakie I know at least six! It’s so strange, as I don’t know that many duplicates of more popular names. I moved from Herts to Yorkshire and the first baby group I joined up here had 2 Graysons!

Poetryinaction · 29/08/2019 21:05

Freya is top 10 in Wales!

This website has a more easily readable/findable list of the 2018 top 1000:

MissHenty · 31/08/2019 10:32

Ladies , without ‘outing’ myself (ie I don’t want to give the name of my child), but he was born in 2015. We gave him a relatively uncommon name at the time but since then it has raced up the charts and is well into the top 100 now. It’s making me really sad and I’m losing sleep over it and getting quite obsessed. Am I clearly losing the plot and in need of counselling (wish I was joking 😆)? I wanted him to have a pretty rare name as I have a common name and there were always 3 of us in a class and it made me sad my brother had an unusual name and always got comments and I never did. I must say that I actually like my name now. I just worry about my son and feel like maybe he’ll think I was a bit slap dash picking a name that was clearly rising in popularity in 2015. He’s not really old enough for me to start asking if he wants to change his name and maybe that’s a cruel idea to put in his head anyway. I’m wondering if maybe I should register an unusual middle name for him to make me feel better that he’ll have that option?

My partner says he couldn’t care less what his own name is and never once worried at school that it was very popular (Dan). Do you think many people are like my husband and just don’t care?

Morado · 31/08/2019 10:47

@MissHenty I gave my daughter a very rare name and I'll be soooooo upset if it rises in popularity so I understand! However I do think lots of people don't care, and your son may be one of them. It's too late to be changing his name now to be honest! I chose my daughters name because it's rare but also because it's beautiful. If it does by chance happen to rise in popularity I wouldn't dream of changing it!
