I've seen that description every now and then on baby name threads. I know what it means but can't think of examples beyond Araminta. What do you consider to be "pony club" names?

I went to pony club and my name has cropped up on this thread multiple times, so maybe there's something in it Grin

What's a pony club? Do you actually have to own a pony to take part Confused?

Reminds me when I was expecting my DD I had set my heart on calling her Bonnie Blue (Gone with the Wind tragic character.)
I was dissuaded. DD says she would have never forgiven me 😊

Never heard or seen this! But I definitely know what you mean.

Fwiw, the only (former) pony club members I know are called Rachel, Lily, Claire and Frances. I don't think any of those are awfully "pony club". So it's a bit of a silly term to me.

I guess they mean things like Araminta though.

What's a pony club? Do you actually have to own a pony to take part ?

You have to supply your own pony, either by owning one or borrowing one. There are weekly 'rallies' where you attend and have lessons on various aspects of riding and horse care. You can also sit various proficiency tests. Most branches have a summer camp. There are usually also shows and competitions.

Where I grew up it was the heart of farming country and everybody had a pony, so pony club wasn't at all unusual or exclusively for the posh. There were posh kids, for sure - but also loads of normal people.

That said, I appreciate that owning (or loaning) horses is an expensive business. If there could be a way of opening up access to people who couldn't afford their own horses it would be much better. Not sure how the logistics would work though.

My MIL is a huge horse lover, owns a few and runs a horse riding club. She’s called Tracey Grin Grin.

The pony club people I rode with (but didn’t attend club myself) were:-

Donna, Emma, Louise,Sarah, Gemma, Lorna, Katie, Rachel, Harriet, Aimee, Victoria, Bethan and Sophie.

This was the 90’s mind!!!

I was talking to a woman very recently who was similarly cross about the whole pony club image issue. She also explained that it's about priorities. She has had to cut down to two foreign holidays a year and had to let the boat go in order to retain her lifestyle and the ponies.

I did chuckle.
(she was lovely BTW)

Imogen shortened to Immy or Immo
