Clarence - possible name for a girl?

TheRedFox · 29/07/2019 07:24

I've just come across the name Clarence and instinctively thought it was a girl's name - turns out I was wrong!

However I think it's for quite a feminine feel to it so could be used for a girl - or am I going mad?!

Cadence is a girls name and sounds similar

AutumnCrow · 29/07/2019 16:49

I like it.

isamonster · 29/07/2019 17:05

Garance is a girl's name

Jux · 29/07/2019 18:43

Go for Harbottle. Much more class.

AverageMummy · 29/07/2019 20:28

Quite a well known boys name

bridgetreilly · 30/07/2019 23:46

Nuns don't count! They will often take the names of male saints. At my school we had Sister Mary Mark and Sister Mary David and Sister Justin...

Clarence is a boy's name. Just pick a girl's name for your daughter.

FamilyOfAliens · 30/07/2019 23:50

If you like it, use it.

Bear in mind that you’re saddling someone else with a boy’s name, not using it yourself, which always strikes me as mean.

The lion. Bless him.

Quite mad I’m afraid!
If you like the [-ice] sound at the end, might I suggest Boris for her? Grin

LightDrizzle · 31/07/2019 00:04

Notso! - if ever there were a mental picture to kill a name stone dead!

Coming across Clarence and thinking it’s a girls name is akin to ‘coming across’ the name Esther and thinking it is a boys name.

Confused

brilliant!

Sunshineys · 31/07/2019 09:56

The -ence ending does look feminine. How about Florence, Prudence or Clemence?

Sunshineys · 31/07/2019 11:15

In France Laurence is a girls name, the feminine version of Laurent.

MissHenty · 11/10/2019 09:47

Acouple of months old but yes @TheRedFox I think Clarence is a cool girls name , especially as obvious nickname is Clarie

I know a few Aurora (nn Rory) and even a Noah who is a girl. I’d be happy if it were my name

MikeUniformMike · 11/10/2019 10:00

Perfect if your surname is House.

How about Florence.

florascotia2 · 11/10/2019 10:19

Pedant alert:

Noa is a Hebrew female name; it sounds the same as the male Noah.

Rory is an English version of a Scottish and Irish Gaelic male name (Ruairidh) that means 'red-haired king'.

Aurora was the ancient Roman goddess of dawn. Just because some people use 'Rory' as a nickname for Aurora does not (IMHO) mean that 'Rory' is a female name.

Rodina is a rare Scottish female name that is based on the male name 'Roddy' (which is a nickname for Ruairidh).

MissHenty · 11/10/2019 11:05

@florascotia2 hello pedant 😊

The female Noah I know is spelt Noah. There’s also a fairly large public Instagram account who has a daughter called Noah @bfnemma

14 girls were born called Rory (not as a nickname but full name) in the Uk last year
