I've liked Luna for years but it seems to be going through a popularity surge at the moment. Will it be a bit passé soon? Not sure whether to take the risk.

If you like it, use it. I think it is probably quite popular.
Bear in mind that names get shortened and lengthened. Loon and Lunatic are quite likely.

dixxy · 26/07/2019 12:37

Thanks for your response. I don't want to use a name that is going to sound dated soon so wanted other people's opinions

I was thinking the other day that Luna ia a bit of a 'fad' name at the moment, I know four baby Luna. It's nice though.

HUZZAH212 · 26/07/2019 12:40

It's very popular as a dogs name too.

dixxy · 26/07/2019 12:40

Thanks, that what I was fearing. I don't know any babies so not sure what the name's doing at the moment.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 26/07/2019 12:40

Sorry but I think it's a dog's name.

Pipandmum · 26/07/2019 12:41

Had a cat named Luna, a friend has a dog named Luna. I’d worry about the ‘Lunatic’ nickname...

AuntieStella · 26/07/2019 12:41

It's very Harry Potter.

I don't take to it, because I can't help but hear a silent 'tic'

And it's a very popular dog's name too (that wouldn't bother me, but it might you)

Abhann · 26/07/2019 12:43

I think it's hopelessly Harry Potterish -- and bear in mind the associations which were presumably the reason that JK Rowling gave that name to a spacey, if ultimately good-hearted character who wears radish earrings and is teased, bullied and isolated by her schoolmates.

dixxy · 26/07/2019 12:44

I don't mind the pet thing as I tend to gravitate towards dog names for some reason 😄
Loony etc doesn't faze me. Thanks! I'm looking for opinions on whether it will date more than if you don't like it 😁

I know a little Luna and don't read Harry Potter so I've always liked the name.

Atlasta · 26/07/2019 12:48

I like Luna.
Unfortunately I do think it will date.

userabcname · 26/07/2019 12:55

I love the name Luna OP and was considering it too (although found out I'm having a boy).
It probably will date but then lots of names are associated with particular eras so does it matter hugely....? I don't know. If I ever do have a daughter I'd still be tempted to use it!

Abhann · 26/07/2019 13:01

Yes, I think it will date, because its spike in popularity is related to the HP phenomenon, though the name predates the series. Obviously, it's not as though it's Khaleesi, though... Grin

Whoops75 · 26/07/2019 13:04

I know 3 luna’s ranging in age from 18-1
not very new and not dated imo

Go for it

katy1111 · 26/07/2019 13:20

I love it. I know it's used more now than it used to be (probably due to Harry Potter) but I don't think it's so popular that it'll become dated. I wouldn't worry too much about that either as you don't know what names will suddenly surge in popularity and then date. I just think if you love it then you should have it.

Frith2013 · 26/07/2019 13:28

A bit too popular now.

Cbeebiesrehab · 26/07/2019 13:29

I know four Lunas at present (and a few four legged ones too) I do like the name but I do think it will date and see it as a bit of a faddy name. You need to think would you regret not using it OP?

florascotia2 · 26/07/2019 13:32

'I'm looking for opinions on whether it will date '

Yes, I think it's very likely it will because of Harry Potter

Saharafordessert · 26/07/2019 13:45

It’s a dogs name!

AverageMummy · 26/07/2019 14:14

Yes it’ll date especially as a vowel heavy sounding name ending with an a. Bella, Ava, Evie etc etc
But why does it worry you if people think she sounds like she has a 50 year old’s name when she’s 50?
If you want a name less associated with this generation you need to go for stronger consonant sounding names that will likely be the next generations preference. Katherine, Sharon etc.

MikeUniformMike · 26/07/2019 16:25

L**a names are currently very popular. Luna, Lola, Lila, Lyra etc.
They seem a bit samey, and tend to put an adult in an age bracket.
There are a lot of vowel-heavy names around.

user1493494961 · 26/07/2019 17:34

Not a fan, think it will date.

Sophronia · 26/07/2019 21:55

Definitely a fad name.
