Baby #2 is due in October. I already have a son, Stanley.
I'm fussy with names
Nothing in top 50
Nothing with strong R or W sound (clashes with surname)
Not ambiguous to say/spell
Vintage or classic name
Has nickname options.
Middle name will be Elsie

So after a LOT of researching a name came to me out of nowhere. It's very unusual and a vintage girl name. I love it and Husband does. However when I look it up on websites, it seems to be a name people either love, or hate.
So now I'm doubting myself.
Do I just go with the name that feels right, and that meets my criteria and brace myself for a few possibly insensitive/negative comments OR just go back to the drawing board again?

Cross post, but I'm a Kiwi, for what it's worth!!

Buttybach · 24/07/2019 02:51

That name is my favourite
My daughter was going to have it but i chickened out

  • Harriet Beecher Stowe authored Uncle Tom's Cabin, Harriet Tubman was the abolitionist - too much cutting and pasting, result = gobbledygook...
themouldneverbotheredmeanyway · 24/07/2019 03:30

I don't want my child to spend their whole life spelling out their name like I've had to do

I think people will ask them to spell Araminta, as they won't be familiar with the name.

It's a nice name, I don't love it or hate it.

Generally I don't tell baby names before birth, as once we've decided I don't want people to say negative things about our chosen name.

FrancesHolmes · 24/07/2019 03:37

It's OK ( so not Marmite...) but Araminta Elsie doesn't really work imho.
Prefer Arabella or Annabel.

FenellaMaxwell · 24/07/2019 04:25

I adore the name - reminds me of Moondial. However I don’t think it sits well with Stanley, and it certainly doesn’t sit with an R-R double-barrelled surname. You mean like Araminta Richardson-Roberts or something? That’s way too many R sounds.

MrMeSeeks · 24/07/2019 04:35

Your child, your choice,
My opinion it really is awful, and it doesn’t work with the middle name that you need to use at all.
Your second choice, does sound a bit better together.

crazycurry · 24/07/2019 04:44

Ds had a book with a dinosaur called Araminta.

CrumpetyTea · 24/07/2019 05:09

I agree with the PP who said its very Jilly Cooper. I don't think it goes with elsie as a middle name (doesn't flow right - works better in reverse) and it isn't the same type of name as your others - stan and elsie are grandparent names (both in Coronation street) I think Winifred goes much better
You've also got a lot of syllables going on making it hard to say and to fit in forms.-

I really like Elsie as a name (could use it as a nn for Elspeth) -

Ihuntmonsters · 24/07/2019 06:00

My name is as long as Araminta, can't say forms have been an issue, at least for my first name, my middle names are a bit of a pain though. I always have to spell it, but just the once as like Araminta it's fairly obvious once you've heard it the once. I don't think that the middle name being a different style matters, especially as it is a family name and with a double barreled surname the middle name will pretty much disappear I think.

percheron67 · 24/07/2019 06:03

Araminta is great. My daughter has a teddy she gave this name to.

mammmamia · 24/07/2019 07:15

It’s nice but it really doesn’t go with Elsie or Stanley!

Miniloso · 24/07/2019 07:19

Minty and Stan ... I think it’s ok.

PleaseGoogleIt · 24/07/2019 07:45

It's a name from Harry Potter.. just in case that would bother you.

dangerrabbit · 24/07/2019 08:21

I think the name is ok, and goes well with the other names

Walkaround · 24/07/2019 09:56

I don't like it - it makes me think of old chewing gum (Arrowmint). Also, some horrible child is bound to call her Ara-munter at some point.

DaanSaaf · 24/07/2019 10:00

Has this thread gone weird for anyone? The op is showing as @lljkk and doesn't make sense Confused

I don't think it goes with Stanley. Stanley is a plain common name and the other isn't.

I think if you're going to opt for unusual names, opt for them all to be unusual

Freyanna · 24/07/2019 10:37

Reminds me of 'Arrowmint' chewing gum.

Very posh.

Astronica · 24/07/2019 12:30

I'm in Australia too, and I think Stanley and Araminta sound great as siblings. And love Minty too. And I like the combo Araminta Elsie. I agree with you OP that Araminta sounds strong rather than frilly - much less frilly to my ears than Arabella, Isabella for instance.

BinkySodPlop · 24/07/2019 12:33

Thing is, however much you want a cute nn/ diminutive as Minty, kids will end up calling her Polo, or Murray or even Colgate.

cyclingwith3 · 24/07/2019 12:34

I’ve taught two and known a sibling. A five year old, a fifteen year old and a toddler. Funnily all a similar look to them.
