Baby #2 is due in October. I already have a son, Stanley.
I'm fussy with names
Nothing in top 50
Nothing with strong R or W sound (clashes with surname)
Not ambiguous to say/spell
Vintage or classic name
Has nickname options.
Middle name will be Elsie

So after a LOT of researching a name came to me out of nowhere. It's very unusual and a vintage girl name. I love it and Husband does. However when I look it up on websites, it seems to be a name people either love, or hate.
So now I'm doubting myself.
Do I just go with the name that feels right, and that meets my criteria and brace myself for a few possibly insensitive/negative comments OR just go back to the drawing board again?

Where I come from, people use minty to describe something scruffy or exceptionally dirty. I agree that Stanley and Araminta are not natural bedfellows. Elsie and Stanley would be better. Also, Araminta Elsie does not flow, doesn't roll of the tongue, sounds clunky and awkward to me.

ShmooBooMoo · 26/07/2019 15:29

Just out of interest, why does Elsie have to be the middle name rather than the first name? I think Elspeth shortened to Elsie is nice. Araminta as the middle name would sound good then. Elspeth Araminta.

Fatkins · 26/07/2019 15:37

I also love Elspeth, but I just don't like Elsie as a name on its own. It's purely the sound I don't really like average. It is in fashion though, you're right about that. It doesn't mean everyone will like it.

whatausername · 26/07/2019 16:18

You both like Araminta so use it. Screw other people's opinions. It's not like you're calling her Domestos.

TatianaLarina · 27/07/2019 00:40

Can’t stand Elsie. It’s not a chic old lady name like Nancy. It’s just a granny with wrinkled stockings.

Owlbert · 27/07/2019 18:02

Love it!

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 27/07/2019 18:16

Anything with mint as the main sound is a bad choice imo.It sounds made up.Arabella is nicer.

TalentedMsRipley · 27/07/2019 18:21

I love Minty!

LatteLove · 29/07/2019 00:34

Araminta is not the worst but not great either IMO. It’s a bit pony club.

Miniwookie · 31/07/2019 20:30

The thing I'm taking away from this thread is that some people know more than one kid called Araminta and someone exists called Minty Clinch! Wtf?

artio0 · 31/07/2019 20:43

Aww, I think Araminta is super cute (but also very grown up).

downbutnotout2018 · 31/07/2019 20:47

Yes it's cool. Keep it. If you're in a middle to upper class area it will work very well. Not so much on a council estate Grin

Enko · 01/08/2019 07:38

I like Araminta I think it's pretty underused and has potential for her to adapt it as she wishes as she grows. Also think it works well w Stanley.

CampfireZen · 01/08/2019 11:27

TankGirl97,

Think it was "Arrietty" in The Borrowers ?!
(Or was that a nickname from Araminta?). It's been decades since I read the book, so I could well be wrong, in which case apologies!

zvjezdica · 05/08/2019 19:04

I have an unusual Ar- name, very similar to Arrietty from the Borrowers, and as a kid I used to pretend my name was Araminta. I read a book called Charm School and there was a character named Araminta and I fell in love with it. It's still one of my favourite names, I really wanted it for my daughter but XH said no (which is not a reflection on the name, he rejected hundreds of names just to be difficult)
I say go for it!

zvjezdica · 05/08/2019 19:07

I must admit I'm not keen on Elsie as the middle name though - I don't think it goes well with Araminta and it reminds me of Nicola Sturgeon as she's mockingly called "Elsie McSelfie" all the time on the internet. I'd go for something like Araminta Rose, Araminta Skye or Araminta Belle, personally

GrapefruitGin · 05/08/2019 19:22

Is it pronounced Ara-meen-tah?

Fink · 05/08/2019 19:27

I hate it, but I wouldn't let that stop you using it.

I can't picture it in an Aussie accent. In England, people would misspell it with an e for the middle a (Areminta), an h at the end or in the middle or both (Arahmintah), an e for the i (Aramenta). Or some combination of these.

Believe me, I have a middle name which is much more common than Araminta, spelt phonetically, and doesn't have any alternative correct spellings. As a middle name, I rarely have to go through the palaver of having it written down, but when I do it's no more than 30% of the time that people spell it correctly without asking.

allthegins · 05/08/2019 19:32

I don’t like it and tbh, I don’t like Stanley as I immediately think of Laurel and Hardy.
If you love it, use it though. You’ll never make everyone happy

BooseysMom · 05/08/2019 19:53

I haven't heard of Arietty from The Borrowers but have heard of Ariadne, a Cretan princess in Greek mythology.
I think Araminta is really nice and as a pp said she has the option of changing it about to suit her. I love Minty! I can see this name becoming more popular. I wouldn't worry about spelling it out to everyone..lots of us have to spell our names out and she can just say Araminta..as it sounds.

Feelingwalkedover · 05/08/2019 19:56

Really can’t be arsed scrolling through 12 pages to find out the name

OooErMissus · 05/08/2019 20:41

OK. Thanks for letting us know.

BlueJag · 05/08/2019 22:23

Minty sounds really cute. Very unusual name but people get used to it. My name is Columba and I get mix reactions all the time. Spelling and pronunciation is a problem too but I think it's a nice name.
Be brave is a nice and unusual name.

OwlBeThere · 06/08/2019 01:08

what really irritates me about this board is the comments that 'everybody' will think a certain thing, and 'nobody' will be able to spell it/say it/like it. when patently neither of those things is true.
I was a huge fan of Moondial as a child and so to me its a lovely nostalgic name that i'm well able to say and spell without a bother.
but what I think is irrelevant, if YOU like it OP. go for it.

OwlBeThere · 06/08/2019 01:09
