Baby #2 is due in October. I already have a son, Stanley.
I'm fussy with names
Nothing in top 50
Nothing with strong R or W sound (clashes with surname)
Not ambiguous to say/spell
Vintage or classic name
Has nickname options.
Middle name will be Elsie

So after a LOT of researching a name came to me out of nowhere. It's very unusual and a vintage girl name. I love it and Husband does. However when I look it up on websites, it seems to be a name people either love, or hate.
So now I'm doubting myself.
Do I just go with the name that feels right, and that meets my criteria and brace myself for a few possibly insensitive/negative comments OR just go back to the drawing board again?

I love Araminta - husband has vetoed it unfortunately

GlamGiraffe · 06/08/2019 11:36

It's a lovely name. I liked it for Dr but DH has a good friend called Araminta and I thought It might seem a bit weird like we were naming DD after here so we chose something else, incidentally also a VERY marmite name. We love it. It completely suits her, other people don't have to live with it, I don't necessarily like their children's names so their opinion is irrelevant as far as I'm concerned. It's a real "proper" name and not something made up so I'd completely stick with it and go for it.

If you like Araminta then go for it!
I work with children and canm confirm that I've never cam accross someone with this name!
As long as you're okay with her friends calling her Minty as I doubt her name would be kept at Araminta?
Where did you hear the name?

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 11/08/2019 08:28

I like Araminta

ChildminderMum · 11/08/2019 08:35

I think Araminta is a perfectly good name, just a very different style to Stanley and Elsie - they're very on-trend, old man names like all the Alfie/Archie/Flora/Margot etc.

Araminta is more Jocasta/Tarquin.

She will also have to spell it constantly as people won't be familiar with it.

Soontobe60 · 11/08/2019 08:38

I agree with those who say it doesn't go with Elsie. It's a bit of a tongue twister saying them together, too many vowels!
I love both names though. Just not together. If you go with Araminta, the second name needs to start with a hard consonant. (And maybe more traditional?)
Araminta Charlotte/Kate/Katherine/Lucy/Rose

I have a first name that’s been in the top ten for large parts of my life and has only one spelling. I still get asked to spell it frequently, usually being asked how the start of it is spelt (and the clue is, always the same).

We like and dislike names in isolation, but once a child has them they just become part of them. Even teachers, wincing when they spot a ‘naughty name’ on the new class list, presumably then feel relieved when that child turns out to be fab. Araminta will just be herself.

HotChocolateLover · 11/08/2019 09:07

It’s a bit ‘try too hard’ .

My suggestions are:

Eleanor
Helena (emphasis on Lana IWSWIM)
Aurielle
