Baby #2 is due in October. I already have a son, Stanley.
I'm fussy with names
Nothing in top 50
Nothing with strong R or W sound (clashes with surname)
Not ambiguous to say/spell
Vintage or classic name
Has nickname options.
Middle name will be Elsie

So after a LOT of researching a name came to me out of nowhere. It's very unusual and a vintage girl name. I love it and Husband does. However when I look it up on websites, it seems to be a name people either love, or hate.
So now I'm doubting myself.
Do I just go with the name that feels right, and that meets my criteria and brace myself for a few possibly insensitive/negative comments OR just go back to the drawing board again?

OP posts:

I know 2. Minty for short. Suits them very well.

NotStayingIn · 23/07/2019 22:34

When I read Araminta on page 1 I wasn’t 100% sure and now on page 3 I really like it.

So that grew on me rather quickly! I really like it.

blahblahblabblahblah100 · 23/07/2019 22:34

I worked with a Aramintia, but she went by Tia.
We called our son with the risk of people negatively commenting...I couldn't care less as we loved it.
If you both love the name, then use it 😊

BettyUnderswoobs · 23/07/2019 22:35

Araminta: Comedy posh girl/Sloane name from the 80s. Also harsh and unattractive sounding.

Stanley: working class old man name.

I don't like either and they definitely don't go together imo.

teenmum18 · 23/07/2019 22:35

I'm not a fan it sounds like a flavoured rice to me Confused and no way does it go with Stanley!
But it's your choice so go for it if you like it.

popehilarious · 23/07/2019 22:35

I also think of Moondial!

Rachelover40 · 23/07/2019 22:36

Nice! I like it.
Got this from wiki:
Araminta is a rare feminine given name, a cross between Aminta and Arabella meaning prayer and protection.

viques · 23/07/2019 22:36

I used to teach a little Stanley, the other children ,nursery age ,couldn't get their tongues round it for some reason, so he was Stamley....

sheshootssheimplores · 23/07/2019 22:36

Too wordy for me but at least it’s a recognisable name!

SoftSheen · 23/07/2019 22:36

Araminta is great, and now that Arabella is relatively popular, won't seem particularly 'out there', I think.

carly2803 · 23/07/2019 22:36

oh dear.... its not the worst name, but it is..awful.

sorry OP - poor kid!!

BroomstickOfLove · 23/07/2019 22:36

Is Stanley still a working class name? All the little Stanleys I know have parents towards the upper-middle class end of the scale with hispsterish leanings.

DeRigueurMortis · 23/07/2019 22:36

I like it, but prefer Hilda

mushroomwall · 23/07/2019 22:37

It's a bit tennis club. It definitely doesn't go with Elsie and doesn't go with Stanley but in fairness OP hasn't specified that it needs to go with her son's name.

SymphonyofShadows · 23/07/2019 22:38

Anyone over a certain age is going to immediately think of the boxer Alan Minter. I knew an Araminta who would be late 40’s now, she really went through it with the boxer pisstake.

Lemonlady22 · 23/07/2019 22:38

is your surname Fortesque....its a posh sloane name.....doesnt go with Stanley which i love, your choice though. Only Minty i know was in Eastenders and was a bloke!

escapade1234 · 23/07/2019 22:38

It’s a tad pretentious, but then you probably know that.

MoistOwlette · 23/07/2019 22:38

I like Araminta.

Fwiw, the one Minty I knew was short for Clementine.

XXcstatic · 23/07/2019 22:40

I like the name but it does not go with Elsie

This.

whirlwinds · 23/07/2019 22:41

Actually like the name, but think I have to disagree regarding the need for spelling it, I have a short, more common name which should be super easy to spell and still people get it wrong or asking me to spell it out.

VenusTiger · 23/07/2019 22:41

It’s okay. Sounds like aromatic - where did Marnie come from??

It’s likely to get shortened to Aram, Arry (Frank Bruno), or Minty which to me are quite boyish.

Up to you though, your baby.

ifeelbadx · 23/07/2019 22:41

It's a Noamita from me

Jimjana · 23/07/2019 22:41

It doesn’t work with Elsie though, the a and the e are difficult to get off the tongue.

wizzler · 23/07/2019 22:42

I don't think it goes with Elsie, but I do like it.
Prefer Ada Elsie
Harriet Elsie
Winifred Elsie

villainousbroodmare · 23/07/2019 22:43

I like it, and I also like Minty, but it definitely doesn't go with Elsie. (imo Elsie matches Stanley. Araminta matches Charles or Sebastian.)
