Christopher variations

What do people think of Christoph / Kristoph for a boy? DH thinks it sounds weird and would prefer Christopher but I'm not keen. I'd like to be able to shorten it to Kit (he doesn't like that either but I'm working on him). Opinions? Don't hold back, I don't mind being told it's weird!

I like Kristoph, it's cute! So is Kit

Vanannabananna · 05/07/2019 11:46

I like kit. If dh cones round just register him as Kit!

DeadDoorpost · 05/07/2019 11:46

I've got a Christopher! Other variations of the name I've come across have been Chris/Cris and Topher.

We toyed with winding both families up by telling them to spell it Kryztofr but didn't in the end... I wish I had done just to see their faces 😂

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2019 12:21

Your husband is right. Kit was nice the first few times I heard it but is a Rooney name.

FarewelltotheFairground · 05/07/2019 13:16

@MikeUniformMike I suppose that might be why he doesn't like it, ha! I'm also not allowed any Arsenal players names. I'm beginning to think his stipulations might be a bit unreasonable.

@DeadDoorpost I'm so, so tempted to do this. Am I that evil? I think I might be Grin

Thanks all for your suggestions, I still have ages to go (due Dec 31st) but nice to get my shortlist narrowed down!

If you are English, call the baby Gareth or Harry. :-)

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2019 13:34

You can't go wrong with Christopher - it's a classic name. You can shorten it to Kit or Chris. Kit is likely to be one of many in his peer group.
I think it is a bit too trendy, and Chris a bit dated.
How about a name from the 1966 World Cup squad.

cookiechomper · 05/07/2019 14:02

I prefer Christopher. Though I once heard it shortened to Topher which was weird.

Owlbert · 05/07/2019 14:02

I've never been keen on Christopher maybe as it was so popular when I was young (4 in my class in first school). Christoph in the UK I think people would just assume it was short for Christopher or that you loved frozen! I like Kit but as a stand alone name and Topher is ok.

CassianAndor · 05/07/2019 14:05

Kit is also a Cumberbatch name, is it not? Bit classier than Rooney!

I think that Christoph/Kristoph only work if you have connections to where those names are the usual form.

LenoVentura · 05/07/2019 14:09

Kit and Kristy are both nice diminutives for Christopher.

AutumnGlitterBall · 05/07/2019 15:49

I think we’re going with Christopher for DS2 in the autumn but have accepted he’ll end up being Chris. We already have a Matthew who is calling himself Matt so we like obvious in this family!

Lycanthropology · 05/07/2019 21:33

I think Kit is a great name.

I had a friend called Christopher at university... his usual diminutive was “Doofer”!

DramaAlpaca · 06/07/2019 00:34

Christopher is lovely and I really like Kit as the diminutive.

ladyisabelle · 06/07/2019 01:46

I love Kit!

I dunno about Christoph but Christos is cool or you could make Christopher the middle name. Christien works as well.

areukiddingme · 06/07/2019 01:51

You might like certain names that are short for any name, one thing to remember is that MOST of the time you don’t pick the nickname, it’s the kids at school that do, I love kit, and if you do call him kit-end of- great name-but if you go with Christopher and most kids at school call him Chris, you’ve got a Chris in your hands

bridgetreilly · 06/07/2019 10:59

Just call him Christopher. The variations sound ridiculously try-hard, unless you are actually from somewhere that is the normal version.

grufallosfriends · 06/07/2019 21:43

If you want Kit, Kristoph works better.

Chris for Christopher or Christian

AnnaMagnani · 06/07/2019 21:49

Just call him Christopher. Child will pick his own nickname.

Or not. I know adult Christophers with no shortenings at all.

CockleburIck · 06/07/2019 21:49

If you want Kit, Kristoph works better

Kit is a centuries old, well established diminutive for Christopher, so it doesn’t need to “work better”.

The variations sound ridiculously try-hard, unless you are actually from somewhere that is the normal version

Yep to this^

MOST of the time you don’t pick the nickname, it’s the kids at school that do

Yep also to this^

NeverSayFreelance · 06/07/2019 22:02

My DP is a Christopher Grin goes by Chris. It's a classic name. Although I like Kristoff - prefer the FF to PH personally.
