Using the same name as a friend

I've just found out im having a baby boy, DH wouldn't discus any names until after we found out the sex. I've always liked the name Harley so it was on my top 5 boy names. However my friend who is due after me told me at the start of her pregnancy that she has decided to call her baby Harley if its a girl. (She is going to find out the sex of the baby when she can). DH didn't know she was planning to call her baby Harley if its a girl and the first name he suggested once we knew it was a boy was Harley. I've spoken to my friend and she said she okay with them having the name. DH seem to have his heart set on Harley now. I just wondered if we should stick with Harley or come up with a new name? And just wondering what everyone would think if your friend planned to call their child the same name as yours?

Nobody owns a name and as she has said she is fine with it I would go for it. I mean you already liked the name anyway AND DH felt the same way - that's so rarely happens that you should definitely use Harley!

How close are you and your friend? I imagine she's more likely to choose a different name once your baby is named Harley. Plus at the moment she doesn't even know if she's having a girl.

Either way, I think stick to the name Harley. It's a great name!

Use it if you love it. She's fine with it anyway. I don't see any problem at all Smile.

If your friend and you are both ok with using the same name I would go for it!

BatFacedGirl · 04/07/2019 10:49

Of all the names out there, surely you can come up with something else?

starkid · 04/07/2019 15:56

Well keep it on your list, but there's plenty of weeks yet to decide (i.e. when he's born and you've looked to see what he looks like). Your friend might not even have a girl.

Just keep it in mind but maybe have some backups just in case I'd say

I'm not keen on the name and it's a bit off to use the same name as your friend.

I love the name Harley but do prefer it for a girl (even though it is a unisex name)

DickieDonkey · 06/07/2019 16:50

Harley is one of those unisex names that seems far more popular for girls now ( at least in my neck of the woods), similar to Riley. But ultimately, no-one has exclusive rights over a name.

Bansheezus · 06/07/2019 17:34

Harley was the first name your DH suggested so you're going with that? What was your input?

SPAMZY · 09/07/2019 00:05

Thanks everyone, at the moment we are going to wait until he is here before deciding his name. We are going to think of a few more names that we both agree on as Harley is the only one we both currently like. The names I like DH doesn't and the names he likes I don't like but i'm sure we will find a few more we both like.

It's not a great name, better for a girl but even then it's chavvy (in my opinion) which obviously doesn't mean much it's just my opinion.
