Russian girls' names

Many thanks to everyone who helped me on my boys' names thread! Now I'm trying to narrow down my list for a girl. Here is my shortlist:

  1. Anna
  2. Clara
  3. Inessa
  4. Larissa (Lara)
  5. Lydia
  6. Natalya
  7. Nina

Constraints are: name should be pronounceable and spell-able in the UK without (too much!) confusion, needs to work in Spanish and Russian, and go with a Spanish surname ending in "ia".

Any views or preferences? Please do share why you don't like any of them, as well!

I like Inessa and Larissa best.

greenlynx · 04/07/2019 00:21

When you said that it should work in Spanish and Russian did you mean for relatives or for passport/ official documents? Or do you just want a name with Russian heritage?
For paperwork you will need something easy to translate like Anna, Nina, Maria, Lara. I don’t like Clara and Larissa from your list, I suspect Larissa might end up as Lara. Anna is my top choice. It’s classic and goes well in any language.

Goostacean · 04/07/2019 10:18

I meant for pronunciation by family who only speak one or other of the language, really. Not too bothered about paperwork.

I'd say Nina and Anna are my favourite. Work in the UK and Spain and are easily pronounced and spelt.

I think Anna sounds beautiful in the Russian accent and is just as beautiful in a Spanish one. I don't find Anna meh at all, I feel it's really underused.

I'd go for what you love, as you will use the name the most.

GRW · 04/07/2019 14:41

Anna is my favourite, timeless and international. I like Lydia and Nina a lot too.

AlliKaneErikson · 04/07/2019 15:54

More Larissa love here (my dd, Lara, wishes it was her name!)

Goostacean · 04/07/2019 20:24

Okay, well I think I'm down to 5, then, which seem to split into two quite clear groups!

Anna, Clara, Nina... or Inessa, Larissa. But I can't narrow it down any further yet!

Anyone have any strong objections to any of them?? I find it easier to be put off than to fall in love 😂

Well, Nina to me sounds like a siren, so that would put me off. Anna is nice, but just a bit boring imo.
Love the other 3 you've shortlisted.

NameChange30 · 04/07/2019 22:44

Anna, Nina, or maybe Clara
The others are fine but a bit "fussy" for my taste
It's not on your list but I love Anya

NameChange30 · 04/07/2019 22:45

Oh and I love Ines but dislike Inessa

Chista · 04/07/2019 22:50

Irina

growlingbear · 04/07/2019 22:53

Anoushka with Anna as the shortened version perhaps?

I love Larissa to. Stunning.

growlingbear · 04/07/2019 22:54

too not to.

sassolino · 04/07/2019 23:05

Orissia and Laviska are so not Russian names, as someone suggested.
Larisa is the correct transliteration of the Russian name Лариса.
I love Lydia from the list.

Goostacean · 05/07/2019 10:22

Hmm... really struggling to narrow it down! With the boys options I presented DH with a final two and then he made the final call. So maybe narrowing it down to one of the more plain, classic ones, and one of the more exotic options? Agree that Larisa is "more correct" but I worry it would be mispronounced in the UK.

Anomaly scan this afternoon so maybe this will all be moot if it's a boy! Will report back...

Love all your names but especially Nina. Every Nina I've ever met is lovely, gorgeous and fun. Hope your scan goes well

Owlbert · 05/07/2019 13:51

Larissa or Inessa, the others are nice but these two really stand out. I was heading towards Larissa at first but love the nickname Nessy so I'm not sure which is my favourite now!

Goostacean · 05/07/2019 15:49

Ahh it's a moot point; we're having a little boy!

I love the name Anna, your other choices are lovely too except Nina which I really don’t like.

NameChange30 · 05/07/2019 15:56

Congrats!

scorpiosister · 05/07/2019 15:58

@Goostacean I used to have a friend called 'Mischka' (mish-ka) love that name

Fatkins · 05/07/2019 16:36

Huge congratulations op!!!
