What do you prefer and why - Lionel or Ivo?

Ivo.
Lionel seems terribly old-fashioned.

Quintella · 30/06/2019 02:37

Lionel is the pervy older guy in your parents' golf club who tries to rub his hard on up against your arse.

Ivo is cool. Not a perv.

LauderSyme · 30/06/2019 02:46

Ivo definitely, I prefer the sound of it and how my mouth feels saying it. Pronouncing Lionel involves too much tongue - sorry if that's weird!

GeorgiaGirl52 · 30/06/2019 03:34

Andrew

Ivo

PunkAssMoFo · 30/06/2019 05:30

Lionel. Ivo sounds a bit curt (and I just don’t like it).
Lionel sounds more complete/ substantial and characterful. I really like it.

Watersnail · 30/06/2019 06:15

Ivo

TurquoiseAndPurple · 30/06/2019 06:35

Ivo!

HeavyDeuty · 30/06/2019 06:41

I should say the surname begins with L and we like alliteration. We also like to have options for shortenings, which Ivo doesn't really allow! Otherwise like both..

Ivo is great.
Lionel with an L surname might be a bit much? Is it easy to pronounce or do the names roll together?

HeavyDeuty · 30/06/2019 07:59

Sort of like Lionel Lester - I think they flow OK because the last l of Lionel and l of the surname merge

I prefer Ivo. Because it was on our shortlist and Lionel wasn’t.

Fatkins · 30/06/2019 08:28

Ivo by miles.

Lionel is a bit like Leonard and Linus to me and they are all names which I dislike. No idea why! I know a lovely Leonard and love the name Laurence / Lawrence.

smeerf · 30/06/2019 08:39

Lionel is cockney rhyming slang for fart and as a child that's what they were called - I couldn't get past that. I like Ivo though.

What about Leon if you like traditional names that alliterate with your surname?

SallyWD · 30/06/2019 08:40

Ivo, although I prefer Ivor.

HeavyDeuty · 30/06/2019 12:52

I'm surprised Lionel gets such a bad reaction.. It strikes me as being both quite soft and strong and not overused. Does anyone other than PunkAssMoFo like it?! I do love Ivo too but DH is more into Lionel and neither of us like Ivor.

I'm surprised at myself for disliking Lionel too op! Lionel, Leonard, Linus and Lyall all make my teeth itch... I'm trying to think why... They all seem a bit flacid and slithery. It's one of those weird reactions people have to names.

I feel the same about Elias, Elliot etc. It's totally irrational and down to personal taste.

I know a little Lyall and a little Leonard and they are adorable. It doesn't put me off the people, but when I think of the names I just don't like the sound.

Owlbert · 30/06/2019 20:50

I love Lionel but I'm not keen on Ivo but no idea why!!

Tillygetsit · 30/06/2019 23:19

No to Lionel. Right up there with Sidney in it's horribleness.

LittleDoritt · 30/06/2019 23:22

I don't like either but I hate Ivo less.
Leonard is great.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 30/06/2019 23:28

Lionel is not my taste

Quite like Leonard, Leo or Leon.

Also like Ivo- very cool name!
