Absolutely hate my 1.5 year olds name

Just that really. Absolutely hate the name we chose for her. We've called her a nickname since she was born (it sounds a bit like "baby" but it's not exactly that) and it's stuck 😳 she responds to that nickname and has absolutely no idea what her real name is.

Sometimes our family do call her by her real name and it makes my skin crawl I hate it so much.

What am I gonna do 😳

I absolutely LOVE Polly!

I went through the same with DC4.
My older 3 all have traditional old English names. With DC4 I fell in love with a different style name.
I got some upsetting comments (including one that said it sounded like a take-away dish (???) and it was ripped apart by people claiming it was "chavvy".
It got to the point where I really wanted to call him something completely different!
However, I'm so glad I stuck to his original name. I still love it now and so does he. It just suits him perfectly and I couldn't imagine him being called anything else.
Besides if I'd gone with the other name that I was on the verge of changing it to, he would have been one of four in his class!!

It’s definitely NOT too late to change it if you want to

I THIBK Polly is a great name for toddlers and older children/adults, but like many names actually it’s quite ‘full on’ for a baby.

You might feel differently when she’s walking and becoming a toddler rather than a baby?!

But if you think you’ll hate it no matter what utvrealky is very easy to change it, justvtry out the new name first for a while to make sure you do like it.

Not helpful but I love Polly. Prefer it to Dolly. And Pol is tres cool 😎

So long as the nickname is going to stand up to school, I wouldn't worry too much about just going with the nickname? I have one name on my birth certificate and another name that I'm actually called by and always have been, and it's never been a problem. The only time I ever use or write the birth certificate name is on official documentation. Other than colleagues being a bit surprised when something formal shows up under a name they don't know, it's never been a problem. Schools and nurseries etc usually ask for the name the child is known by and often it's not the 'official' name.

Polly is a lovely name

Peitho · 28/06/2019 19:14

I love the name Polly too but if you hate it you hate it. Does she have a middle name that she could use instead? Would save her admin hassle throughout her life with birth cert name not matching passport name etc.

Also, is her father in agreement or is he happy with her name as it is?>

CrispbuttyNo1 · 28/06/2019 19:21

I think the name is lovely too.

FloofyHeckonChonker · 28/06/2019 22:04

I absolutely hate ds first name. We call him by his middle name. I had no choice as all the males in dh's family have this name. Some use it and some don't.

There's a stunning little red headed girl I see with her grandmother most days. They are both called Molly. The young Molly answers to Mini/Minnie as everyone calls her Mini Molly.

meuh · 29/06/2019 08:08

I know a 10yo Polly and an adult Polly. I think it's a great name. I reckon perhaps she'll grow into it and it just feels odd for a baby/toddler. What would you change it to, and is there a chance you'd then feel the same about the new name too?

I think sometimes naming can feel like a big responsibility and you worry you've made a mistake, but almost always the name ends up suiting the child perfectly and no one could imagine anything different.

NeverSayFreelance · 29/06/2019 08:49

I hate the name Polly, sorry PPs. I would have it changed if I were you and hated it that much.

RoRo248 · 29/06/2019 08:59

My daughter is called Polly and I love it! It does get shortened to Poll or Polls quite a lot!

FizzyGreenWater · 29/06/2019 16:01

Polly is lovely.

Could you change her BC to Polydora? Amazing name and you could gradually morph into calling her Dora or Dolly?

Pollyanna another one, Anna is a great short form here.

septembersunshine · 29/06/2019 17:55

Crikey op, Polly is a cracking name. You loved it before....do you think you might one day love it again? Maybe its a case of tweaking her name so you have options? Pollyanna is cool. You have polly/Anna/Annie . Dolly not in the same league and Molly is very cute.

Holly is similar sounding. Is there another name you love?
