Thoughts on the name Romy

After whittling down from a short list of 4 (also posted) I think I’ve found my baby name. It’s a little bit quirky and don’t think we’ll be coming across many others but it isn’t too unusual/strange.

Keen to to do a test run and hear people’s thoughts - both good and bad - to push me into making my final decision.

The name is Romy (pronounced Ro-me not Rom-e)

There is no need to suggest Romilly as an alternative as it doesn’t work for us

Thanks in advance!

Would have been the name I chose if this one was a girl, so I love it! For the reasons you have mentioned.

Paisley2018 · 22/06/2019 20:11

Why do you care what other people think? It will probably put you off the name of you get negative responses.

HavelockVetinari · 22/06/2019 20:12

It's the name of an AWFUL Jilly Cooper character so it's a no from me!

growlingbear · 22/06/2019 20:13

I really like it. Always have.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/06/2019 20:14

My DB is friends with a Romy and she's one of the sweetest people I've ever met, so from association alone that would make the name a big 'yes' from me.

QuickRedFox · 22/06/2019 20:15

I know one, I like it.

Cagedbird00 · 22/06/2019 20:16

I remember though, there will always be some people that dislike a name, no matter what the name is. You can’t please everyone, it’s your baby, as long as you like the name that’s all that matters.

Processedpea · 22/06/2019 20:16

Romy and Michelle's high school reunion Grin

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 22/06/2019 20:17

Quite like it but really really like Remy.

WifOfBif · 22/06/2019 20:17

I love it.

QueenAnneBoleyn · 22/06/2019 20:20

We know a Romy. Lovely girl.
I think its a lovely, unique name and has a timeless quality.

BlueMerchant · 22/06/2019 20:20

I really don't like it. Has a bit of a cheap vibe. Sorry.

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 22/06/2019 20:28

I worked with a girl once called Romany which I always thought was pretty,so is Romy

Pinkmouse6 · 22/06/2019 20:44

Huge fan.

Zoflorabore · 22/06/2019 20:47

Op I have always loved this name but when we had our dd my dp wasn't keen :(

From me it stemmed from watching Romy and Michelle as a teen and i decided that it was going to be my daughters name!

Go for it. You will never ever please everyone. And you don't have to.

DramaAlpaca · 22/06/2019 20:49

I like it very much.

It's a traditional diminutive of Rosemary.

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/06/2019 20:59

Great name. I taught a Romy who was delightful

Abstractporridge · 22/06/2019 21:03

@Paisley2018 because if I like it regardless of negative feedback then I know it’s the one

Eaudear · 22/06/2019 21:08

Yes, I love Romy, I think I considered for DD at one point. It does feel a bit nicknamey, like it should be short for a longer name but I wouldn't worry to much about that.

Quite like it but really really like Remy.

Isn't Remy a boys name?

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 22/06/2019 21:12

I don’t dislike it. Have only met one - a girl at my DS’ nursery, would be 7 now. London middle class, fwiw, but I think it’s an unusual enough name that it doesn’t seem strongly attached to any particular location or class iyswim.

diddlediddle · 22/06/2019 21:32

Like it

Abstractporridge · 22/06/2019 21:51

@NellWilsonsWhiteHair

Agreed it doesn’t seem to be attached to a certain class/location which is another reason that we like it. I’ve also only come across one so far (parents were creative types)

@Eaudear
Thanks for feedback. I agree it’s a bit nicknamey but that doesn’t bother us. There is such huge diversity in names these days (where I live this includes many from different cultures) that I just don’t think it’s an important factor.

All I can say is - if you like it, and it's individuality - don't ask about it on Mumsnet!!

I've got a Romy, she's 3 and I'm watching the popularity sky rocket!

Cornishmum00 · 22/06/2019 21:54

I like it, also know a Romani which i think is lovely and could be shortened as nn

smashamasha · 22/06/2019 21:54

And Remy is a French/Nigerian boys name but quite a few girls being called it now.
