I really like this name and love the shortening of Elsie. Just wanted to know what other peoples honest opinion is as I’d rather not know what friends/family think yet!

Thank you.

Love it! Really elegant.

diddlediddle · 19/06/2019 21:04

Weird I was thinking about this name the other day.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer but I've always felt it to be a very drippy nothingy sort of name. I imagine a very meek and apologetic woman. I think it's the combo of the "s" and the "th" sounds that make it sound a bit pathetic to me. It's not a strong sound. Also hate Elsie, equally drippy. SORRY!

officepolitics · 19/06/2019 21:05

Lovely name.

wigglybeezer · 19/06/2019 21:06

It was on my list for DC3 but he turned out to be another boy!

Flyingkites123 · 19/06/2019 21:09

If you like the name go for it! Whether people like it or not now they'll soon love it when they start to associate it with your little one.

BlueMerchant · 19/06/2019 21:10

I don't like it.A bit 'wet'. Prefer Elsie as a name in its own right but still don't love it.

Sexnotgender · 19/06/2019 21:11

Love it. Not super keen on Elsie though.

Creatureofthenight · 19/06/2019 21:13

It’s a lovely name.

InterchangeableEmma · 19/06/2019 21:20

An excellent choice!

It might be worth considering spelling it Elsbeth, she'd be less likely to have to spell it to people and there's more choice of nicknames. I love Elsie and she probably will too but if she fancied another nn when she's older she'd have so many (less popular) great options.

CountFosco · 19/06/2019 21:23

Good name, I'm Scottish and know a few and none of them are wet or drippy Confused.

InterchangeableEmma · 19/06/2019 21:25

(My DD has another of the Elizabeth variations and has gone with a different nn to the one we used when she was little. TBH it suits her better. We use 'our' nn and 'her' nn and her full name interchangeably within the family. Mostly hers though. She's 'her' nn or 'full name' to friends)

BoudicasBoudoir · 19/06/2019 21:27

It’s a family name for me. We’re Scottish and it seems very Scottish to me.

We considered it for our daughter, who was born last year, as my husband really liked the short form ‘’Elsie’. However, the midwife who came to see us the day after we got out of hospital said she’d met four Elsies that week! So we took it off the list.

flissity · 19/06/2019 21:28

I know an Elsbeth- very eccentric old lady!

Barbarafromblackpool · 19/06/2019 21:30

I have a 4 year old Elspeth. She's funny, quirky and sweet. We call her Effie as a pet name.

wigglybeezer · 19/06/2019 21:55

Yeah not a drippy name IMO, the Elspeth I know best runs triathlons!

LookAtThatRedSheep · 19/06/2019 22:06

Thanks all. I do really like both so think we’re going to go for it!

Love Elspeth. Don’t like Elsie but suspect that’s e it’s very popular where I am now.

lunaspring · 19/06/2019 22:08

Beautiful name. Not 'wet' in the slightest. Very classy and sophisticated!

AnonymousP · 19/06/2019 22:10

Love Elspeth! Cool and classy. I really dislike Elsie though, I find it really twee and babyish.

LookAtThatRedSheep · 19/06/2019 22:10

@BoudicasBoudoir my Scottish Granny will be chuffed I hope!

@AnonymousP that’s a reason why I’m reluctant to go for just Elsie. I have a twee little girls name and wish I had a formal name to use professionally

i spotted one in my family tree (thought what a lovely name) then found 3 others! all circa 1700's

myfingersarenotsogreen · 19/06/2019 22:14

I always thought the short form was Eppie?

Browniee · 19/06/2019 22:17

I love Elsie and Elspeth. But I am biased...

My new baby is called Elsie, I love it. I really liked Elspeth too as a longer full name but DP wasn’t keen so we just went with Elsie.

My great grandma was called Elsie though so never thought of it as a babyish name ☺️

bridgetreilly · 19/06/2019 22:53

Lovely. I like both Elspeth and Elsie.
