I really like this name and love the shortening of Elsie. Just wanted to know what other peoples honest opinion is as I’d rather not know what friends/family think yet!

Thank you.

Sorry, but I think Elspeth is dreary & weak sounding & Elsie is twee.

But your baby, your choice of course.

PinkieTuscadero · 20/06/2019 00:11

Dull and dreary and very wet.

sorry.

PinkieTuscadero · 20/06/2019 00:12

I think it's the combo of the "s" and the "th" sounds that make it sound a bit pathetic to me. It's not a strong sound.

Yes, I think this is it! Such a lispy name.

julensaor · 20/06/2019 00:41

Love it but don't really like elsie

Astronica · 20/06/2019 08:39

I think it's great.

TheVanguardSix · 20/06/2019 08:43

I really like this name. It's the Scottish diminutive of Elizabeth, which I didn't know.
I also like the name Embeth.
Elisheva, which is beautiful as well, is the Hebrew version of Elizabeth.

Ohyesiam · 20/06/2019 08:45

Very very pretty and feminine without being at all girly or wet.

CloserIAm2Fine · 20/06/2019 14:07

I love it

DennisSkinnersMolotov · 20/06/2019 15:44

I love it. It reminds me of Elspeth Tassioni in The Good Wife, she was ace.

BarryBarryTaylor · 20/06/2019 15:49

Yes I love it too, not at all what I would consider wet, quite the opposite actually I imagine someone with a bit of ‘spark’ when I think of this name.
Isn’t it funny how names all sound so different to us!?

Timeandtune · 20/06/2019 15:52

Agree. Love the name. The Elspeth that I know is not remotely wet.

LookAtThatRedSheep · 20/06/2019 18:36

We’re definitely using it.

I don’t know what ‘wet’ means in relation to a name - wet behind the ears? Wet blanket? Maybe she’ll be an Olympic swimmer 🤣Not that it matters really as it’s just perfect for our daughter. Thanks for all the comments x

Love it and prefer the full version. I only know one and she’s 30. She’s definitely not “drippy” - very much the opposite!

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 20/06/2019 18:54

Love Elspeth (and Ishbel, another fine and underused Scottish name.)

daisypond · 20/06/2019 18:55

I really like Elspeth but I’m not so keen on Elsie.

CakeRattleandRoll · 21/06/2019 05:57

One of my most favourite names and love the nn Elsie.

17caterpillars1mouse · 21/06/2019 19:49

I have an Elspeth. We trialled Elsie but it just didn't suit her so she is Elspie

Some people have struggled with it and my grandparents still think it's Elsbeth despite me explaining it but generally people are really positive about it

Owlbert · 24/06/2019 16:18

Lovely!

avalanching · 24/06/2019 16:23

I really like Elsbeth, I find Elspeth a little clunkier and not as nice sounding. But either make a nice change from the usual names you see (she says with kids with very common names ha!)

avalanching · 24/06/2019 16:25

@DennisSkinnersMolotov oh I thought she was Elsbeth? Maybe they actually end up sounding the same, in which case ignore my last comment and I say yes it's lovely as I too think of her!

LookAtThatRedSheep · 26/06/2019 05:44

Baby Elspeth arrived safe and well. We’ve had lots of positive comments about her name, bar one from my sister who said it’s a bit old fashioned, but I’m positive we’ve made the right choice! She’s a little darling 😍

Meant to add - we went with Elspeth rather than Elsbeth for a few reasons - the ‘sp’ felt more natural than the ‘sb’, we both have Scottish grandmothers whereas the ‘sb’ spelling is German, plus it gets autocorrected to Elspeth whenever you type it anyway. She’ll be Elsie day to day.

Congratulations! I realise now what I thought was Elsbeth is actually Elspeth, it's beautiful either way :)
