Greta

Is Greta a nice name? Would it seem odd on a child with no European links?
I just think it has such a cool, vintage vibe and I like Ettie for a nickname. I also am liking Ada at the moment, which is perhaps a bit more in keeping with current trends.

Greta is beautiful and doesn’t require a nickname. Ettie to me is naff, like Lottie.

AverageMummy · 16/06/2019 10:31

I really love Ada
I can’t make my mind up about Greta - I think I’d love it on someone else’s child but wouldn’t use it myself

Clownfish123 · 16/06/2019 10:33

Averagemummy - I know what you mean. What's cool or interesting on someone else's child can feel too much for me, but maybe I just need to be more brave.

Be brave - it’s a lovely name !

BlueMerchant · 16/06/2019 10:38

Lovely

TurquoiseAndPurple · 16/06/2019 10:40

I reeeeally don't like it. The gret sound is awful. And reminds me of regret.

Missillusioned · 16/06/2019 10:40

Depends on the surname. If it's something very English, or something that begins with an R it may sound odd.

Raaaaaah · 16/06/2019 10:43

I know of a few Greta and Gretels now. All of them English parents. I really like them both. I think they are gaining in popularity but that’s because they are nice names. None of them get shortened. I also love Ada and know of one 7yr old Ada.

Clownfish123 · 16/06/2019 10:45

Surname is Irish but not obviously so. It's short and one syllable, goes fine with Greta, sounds quite cool actually (I think anyway)

Lovely

canislupis · 16/06/2019 10:52

I have a Greta. We have only ever met a teenage one although a friend of a friend had one recently. I think it might be a marmite name!

SophyStantonLacy · 16/06/2019 10:52

Greta Thunberg will no doubt have increased its recognition.

WaxOnFeckOff · 16/06/2019 10:54

Greta is generally short for Margaret but I think it can stand alone perfectly well. I like it but personally I'd have Margaret known as Greta as that gives loads of future options. I have a boring name with very little options so I'm clearly biased.

Yawninfinitum · 16/06/2019 10:55

Love it

Clownfish123 · 16/06/2019 10:58

@canislupis - Does your dd like her name? Do you generally get positive reactions? I would love to meet a little Greta!
Gretta Ray is a singer I saw perform recently and she was amazing, gave me the idea for the name.

Waxonfeckoff - I know what you mean and I do generally like full names on birth certificates (Harriet for Hattie, Charlotte for Lottie etc) but I'm really not keen on Margaret and think Greta is strong enough to stand alone. I do agree that generally it's nice to have options though.

I like it, much more than Ada

canislupis · 16/06/2019 11:06

I’ve never asked her tbh, she’s 7. She likes that it’s an anagram of great! I like that it’s a classic non-frilly name.I think it’s top 20 in Italy! We are thoroughly British & have a two syllable Scottish surname... I don’t think people think of it as connected to Margaret, at least they don’t mention that.

haverhill · 16/06/2019 11:08

I’ve taught a couple, both intelligent and very pleasant girls! I like it.

Frazzled2207 · 16/06/2019 12:31

I think Thunberg but IMO definitely a positive connotation

SundayMorningSun · 16/06/2019 12:37

Nice!

I had an Aunty Gret, she was a Margaretta, I think.

DramaAlpaca · 16/06/2019 12:40

A few years ago I'd have said I hated Greta but it's grown on me recently. It works fine as a name in its own right rather than a diminutive.

I can see Greta going really well with a short Irish surname - it sounds great with mine Grin

GreenTulips · 16/06/2019 12:41

It was on my short list - DH wasn’t keen

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 16/06/2019 12:57

Prefer Grettel but Gretta is lovely also
