Current thoughts on Saskia?

Daisychain66 · 10/06/2019 10:10

Saskia is under serious consideration so I’ve been trying to do a bit of research on it. I’ve read all the mn threads on Saskia- the eastenders and big brother connections keeps coming up and general consensus was that they made the name appear ‘chavvy’ (I wasn’t aware of either association as have never watched either of the programmes). However some of these threads are up to 10 years old- do you think those associations still exist in 2019? Or do they lessen the further away we move?
Any and all thoughts on the name welcome please!
(Bonus q: what do you think about it as a sister name to Isadora?)

I think it's a lovely name,

I wouldn't have made connections to either BB (no longer on?) or EE - is it a current character?

Divgirl2 · 10/06/2019 10:16

It's maybe a little dated but I quite like it, and very underused now. I wouldn't say the previous associations are still there (I've never watched EastEnders though so no idea what happened to the character.

Hollowvictory · 10/06/2019 10:18

It's a Dutch name (Rembrandts wife) and is timeless, beautiful, classic name. No idea about eastenders I don't watch it.

Hollowvictory · 10/06/2019 10:19

'dated' well its several hundred years old! Saskia Rembrandt was born in 1612! So yes 400year old name. Making it classic not dated.
😂🤣

Zoeputthatdown · 10/06/2019 10:24

I like it.
I didn't watch EE or BB so wouldn't let any associations put me off the name.

Sounds good. Smile

Penny4Thoughts · 10/06/2019 10:28

I think names are changing a lot with people going for a much wider selection and there being more nationalities bringing in their own heritage etc. I don’t know anything about the associations you mention - to me Saskia is a name I don’t like very much but just for my taste - nothing particular.

Divgirl2 · 10/06/2019 10:29

Steve, Mary and Paul are all old names but I think we'd all agree they were dated by current standards. What I mean is everyone I know who is called Saskia is in their late 20s/early 30s so the likelihood is that the baby will share a name with their parents generation. Like if you're in your 30s and called Kevin or Tracey. Not quite old-school-cool yet.

Hollowvictory · 10/06/2019 10:34

DivGirl do you live in the Netherlands? I'm surprised you know so many Saskia's!

Eleanor90 · 10/06/2019 10:47

I absolutely love it and had no idea about the Eastenders or BB connections. I think it’s utterly gorgeous and feisty and I like it a lot with Isadora too.

owlofathena · 10/06/2019 10:51

I really love it but unfortunately dh doesn't so not on our list. I had no idea about bb association and I vaguely remember a saskia in eastenders when I was in primary school so can't see it being an association people think of now

SundayMorningSun · 10/06/2019 11:43

Too rare to be "dated", I think.

I've only known one and she was awesome. I don't know either of the TV associations.

Cool with kind of a Scandi vibe almost? I like it.

maimainomai · 10/06/2019 11:56

I like it. Very pretty and spiky!

forevercurious · 10/06/2019 12:01

I like it :)

Sessy19 · 10/06/2019 12:01

Saskia is 100% awesome. And I hope to GOD it doesn’t become popular.

I don’t think it’s chavvy (what a nineties term!! 😂)
I certainly don’t think, as pp stares, that it’s used regularly enough to be ‘dated’.

My daughter will be named Saskia when she gets here, and that can’t come soon enough. I think it’s a perfect name.

And we must have similar tastes, because Isadora would also be on my list (along with Elke) if I was contemplating more than one babe....but I’m not. And I won’t give such lovely names to a dog, so I’ll just fanaticise...😊

Sessy19 · 10/06/2019 12:01

I was t aware of its Dutch heritage, it’s Scandi to me...(I’m Danish)

Emilydickensonsdogs · 10/06/2019 12:05

Love the name. Only know one and she is a fabulous girl of 17.

PhossyJaw · 10/06/2019 12:11

Saskia Rembrandt is my main association. I couldn't take anyone who watches Eastenders or Big Brother remotely seriously. It's a lovely name.

Antonin · 10/06/2019 12:12

I love this name. Was never as popular as Tracey etc when it was more common so hasn’t dated in the same way.
It goes very well with Isadora as both names have a history of being less used in the UK. and are of the same length

Quintella · 10/06/2019 12:15

Lovely name. Elegant and grown up. Saskia is a specialist in Christie’s Chinese Ceramics department. She wears a lot of Dries van Noten and enjoys a negroni.

PugPupsMum · 10/06/2019 13:07

I love it, I’d use it myself if DH liked it but he doesn’t unfortunately

monsieurmarius · 10/06/2019 13:12

I like it and don't think it's chavvy or dated at all

Ivy44 · 10/06/2019 13:13

I like it. I’ve only known one, a friend at Uni who was a lovely and intelligent person.

Not sure about the BB and EastEnders associations as I don’t watch them.

It’s always struck me as a classic name, I’d associate it more with SaskiaRembrandt than anything else.

MollyHuaCha · 10/06/2019 13:28

Beautiful name.

DrDentyst · 10/06/2019 13:32

It was very nearly my 5 month old name but it just didn't suit her so we went with something else. Therefore I obviously think it's lovely. I remember the eastenders and big brother contestants but I don't see anything in here dating no to a name because if love island etc

DrDentyst · 10/06/2019 13:33
