Fergus

Is it odd to name our baby Fergus if we're not Irish? We do both have Irish heritage but wouldn't identify ourselves as Irish.
We're really struggling with boys names.
I just want a normal but not too common name. I think Fergus is lovely.

I think it's lovely too.

tiramisu1 · 03/06/2019 10:40

Lovely underused name!

NuffingChora · 03/06/2019 10:44

Great name - wouldn’t say it’s overtly associated with a country - though more likely to be Scotland than Ireland if it was, I reckon? Fergal would make me think more along the lines of a definitely Irish name (and is also great).

BlueBrushing · 03/06/2019 10:45

I'm Irish - I think it is a genuinely horrible name - like a worse wversion of fungus 🤮

MooBaaLaLaLa · 03/06/2019 10:47

Great name, one we strongly considered. I'd say go for it!

Watersnail · 03/06/2019 10:58

I quite like it, and Angus too.

duggeehug85 · 03/06/2019 12:36

I love it and plan to use it.

TrixieFranklin · 03/06/2019 12:45

We have a little boy on the street whose name is Fergus, he's terribly cute Grin

NervousBFP · 03/06/2019 14:55

duggehug are you Irish or Scottish? I just worry people will think it doesnt 'fit' (for us, I mean).

I think it's a lovely name!

happyhillock · 03/06/2019 14:59

Horrible name

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 03/06/2019 14:59

I would associate it more with Scotland but anyway, I don’t think it matters. A friend has just called her son a very Irish name, complete with Irish spelling and her Irish heritage is a couple of generations back, and her husband has none. Anything goes these days, I think.

Letthemysterybe · 03/06/2019 15:02

I think it’s perfectly fine. And Fergus is cute, though I much prefer Angus .

CassianAndor · 03/06/2019 15:07

Posh Scot would be my first thought.

Really don't like it. Angus is miles better.

GlitterPixie · 03/06/2019 15:08

I thought it was Scottish? I’m Irish and don’t know a single Fergus

Groovee · 03/06/2019 15:10

I live in Scotland and have worked with a few boys named Fergus. Not overly common but they've suited their name.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 03/06/2019 15:11

I think it's a brilliant name. A friend of mine has a 22 year old Fergus - neither parent is Scottish.

AgileLass · 03/06/2019 15:11

Fergus is an Irish name, it’s from the Ulster cycle - hence the connection with Scotland. But sufficiently mainstream enough for anyone to use, I would have thought (the Queen Mother’s brother was Fergus if I remember rightly).

Whatareyoutalkingabout · 03/06/2019 16:05

I really want to like it as I like the NN Gus but it just reminds me of fungus.

lunar1 · 03/06/2019 16:05

I didn't know it was an Irish name. My friend named Fergus has one English parent and one Chinese parent. I think it's a lovely name.

DramaAlpaca · 03/06/2019 16:30

I like it.

RuthW · 03/06/2019 18:38

Love it

Limer · 03/06/2019 18:40

Fungus

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 03/06/2019 18:44

I like it

feellikeanalien · 03/06/2019 18:55
