Dh and I love old family names - our dd1 is named after dh's great aunt, and we want to do something similar for dd2.

I really want to use Zelda for dd2 - it was my great-grandmother's name. She was born in Britain to Russian Jews who had fled the pogroms, so it seems to have a real sense of family history and struggle attached to it. It also means happiness, which I love.

Dh loves the name too - his only concern is that people will only think of the game. I know that lots of people will instantly think of 'The Legend of Zelda' when they hear the name - is that a negative?

Any other opinions concerning Zelda are welcome too!

I don't know what game you're referring to!
It's a pretty name. I've only ever heard it on Sabrina the teenage witch but not a negative thing.

Firstimpressionsofearth · 01/06/2019 21:16

I only came on here to comment,

The legend of

But I see you already know about that.

lottiegarbanzo · 01/06/2019 21:17

I like it. It makes me think of Zelda Fitzgerald, author, married to F Scott Fitzgerald. Not sure she had a very happy life but she was a good writer.

Junowhat · 01/06/2019 21:20

I love it and I firmly believe that the family connection over rules any other negative connotations (not that I know of any). So go for it!

IceRebel · 01/06/2019 21:20

Legend of here too, although it's not a negative connotation.

MrsMeSeeks · 01/06/2019 21:23

I posted about this name a few weeks ago! The obvious association to me is Zelda Fitzgerald, but on the thread it was about 70-80% "Legend of..." I guess it's only a bad thing if you don't want to be thought of as a big gamer!

Penny4Thoughts · 01/06/2019 21:24

Lovely family history I’d definitely use it

Wolfiefan · 01/06/2019 21:25

I love the meaning and family connection.

ForeverBubblegum · 01/06/2019 21:27

I instantly thought legend of, but doubt anyone close to her age will have heard of the game, so it's unlikely to cause any problems.

Just don't let her learn the ocarina when she's older.

MissMoodyMoo · 01/06/2019 21:27

Sabrinas aunty!

tilder · 01/06/2019 21:30

What Firstimpressionsofearth said.

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 01/06/2019 22:27

Not a negative here - I bloody love the name. DH wouldn't let me use it and we had boys anyway Grin

Malyshek · 01/06/2019 22:34

I think people born in the 80's and 90's,who grew up with the game, will definitely make the association. But as to whether that's a bad thing... I mean, it's not worse than all the people who called their daughters Arya, Khaleesi, Cersei or Daenerys after GoT.

Personally, if I met a Zelda, I'd assume the parents were fans of the game and I'd think, "hey, cool !" and then I'd probably not think more of it.

Watersnail · 01/06/2019 22:38

To me it sounds witchy, not in a good way but like a fairy tale villain. It also reminds me of the grizzly, gristly name Griselda which I assume it originates from.

BuffaloCauliflower · 01/06/2019 22:41

I love it, it’s on our longlist. I think Legend of, Fitzgerald and Sabrina’s aunt, and none of these connotations are negative. Go for it!

WarmthAndDepth · 01/06/2019 22:48

Lovely!

TheCrowdSayBoSecta · 01/06/2019 22:48

There are a few threads already on this with the same concerns. I'll say the same thing... it's my mothers name and she loves it. She doesn't get legend of comments.

Tunt · 01/06/2019 22:50

Nope. Pet Sematary.

Finchley86 · 01/06/2019 22:51

It also reminds me of the grizzly, gristly name Griselda which I assume it originates from

It actually has two origins - the Germanic origin is through Griselda, you're right, but it's also a Yiddish name (and is the female version of Selig).

I love it, and have no idea what game you mean. I think Zelda is a fab name!

abbiecloud · 01/06/2019 22:54

Terra hawks

DestinyIsCallingMe · 02/06/2019 09:58

Gorgeous name. And I love the family connection.

Pinkvoid · 02/06/2019 11:09

My DS is obsessed with Legend of Zelda so that sprung to mind immediately.

Mrspenny87 · 02/06/2019 11:53

Really don’t like it! Sorry!

Berrylin · 02/06/2019 19:32

Zelda is gorgeous. It’s one of my favourite names of all time! I’m not familiar with the game, so it’s not something that would occur to me.
