Anyone picked a really “original” name...

... only to discover it isn’t at all?

I have a Kit. Thought it was a bit quirky and “different” at the time. Even the stats seemed to suggest so.

He’s 2 and I’m hearing it EVERYWHERE. Yet another celebrity has just had one. I still love it of course but isn’t funny how we think we’re being really cool and “original” and actually we’re anything but!

Anyone else have any tales of baby naming woe? Grin

@Ca55andraMortmain I haven't met another Thea, it gets comments about being unusual quite a lot - it must be where we are (West Yorkshire) but I read of Thea's quite a lot on here etc.

We also got it from a TV show.. I'm guessing you're talking about Arrow Grin

@mimbuns unbelievably I know a Hester though work - shes in her 20s.

Horrible name!

BeckyAnnLeeman · 28/05/2019 20:33

I think people who are having their first child and who don't yet know a lot of kids have a very different idea of which names are original. I agree with a pp that some names are 'in the air' and they creep into our subconscious and then up into our conscious until we think we've discovered an unused gem! Grin

BeckyAnnLeeman · 28/05/2019 20:34

I feel sad for all the future Ednas though. That name does not deserve a comeback.

Antonin · 28/05/2019 20:41

Tea addict. Another unusual Biblical name a close relative of mine has used is Omri. It is the name of the boy in the children’s book The Indian in the Cupboard. Originated from the Book of Kings. After listing various kings who transgressed against God it says “And Omri was the wickedest of the all”.
Just why would you?
I agree with the previous poster re something in the air — no other explanation for why over a short period of time so many parents feel attracted to a name they are sure will be uncommon. My mother told me she chose my name because she liked it and didn’t know anyone else by that name. That year and the following it was the most popular girls’ name.

Insertwitticismhere · 28/05/2019 20:52

Dd1 has the 4th most popular name for her birth year (though I was also v fond of Dorothy) We are yet to meet another child with the same name...just shows you should simply choose something you love.

sparklytwinklyfairylights · 28/05/2019 21:00

The year my dd was born only 6 other girls were named the same name as her in the country, one of the other 6 is in her class

Canone · 28/05/2019 21:37

@sparklytwinklyfairylights No way Shock

@Ravingstarfish Aw, I think that’s lovely!

I have a 6 year old called Kai and I'm totally in love with the name! He suits it so well!

russianoak · 28/05/2019 22:34

@Ravingstarfish @KindnessCrusader please say it isn't John Thomas

russianoak · 28/05/2019 22:36

@Canone @Ravingstarfish oops. Someone should have RTFT 😂

BikeRunSki · 28/05/2019 22:37

Nearly 50 years ago, my parents wanted a Z name for their last child. There was a Zelda on our street, so they thought they’d go “unusual” with Zoe. There were 3 Zoes in her primary school class, and 9 in her year at secondary!!

Crushedvelvetcouch · 28/05/2019 22:37

I have a seven year old Reuben, it was practically unheard of and I used it due to my Jewish ancestry.
There's another in his school aged five and I know of about five pre school age Reubens.....
So 'original name' fail.
I feel bad as his four siblings actually do have original names, as in I haven't met any others with their names. All (except one, which is french) old testament names too, just seemingly more obscure Hmm

recklessgran · 28/05/2019 22:39

I have a 26 year old Kitty who changed her name by deed poll to Kit because she thought Kitty too "middle class". She felt Kitty might prevent her being taken seriously in her career.

BellMcEnd · 28/05/2019 22:41

Jaffa snap. We thought we were being sooooo unusual. That said, I only know 2 others although I do hear it in the park a lot. I also liked Isaiah but my mum said no one would ever spell it correctly Grin

GinoPlaysTheTango · 28/05/2019 22:41

When I was about 20, I met a girl of the same age whose parents had gone travelling in Australia before she was born and named her a really original and unusual Australian name. Nobody in the UK had ever heard of it, but everyone liked it.

This lasted until she was about 16, when Neighbours became really popular. And ever since then she has been "Kylie? As in Minogue?"

oobedobe · 28/05/2019 22:49

People often think they are being original with baby names, but we are mostly exposed to the same trends, media, movies, pop culture as everyone else. I think there are trends in terms of what sounds modern/current, for example girls names ending in vowels have been popular for the last 10-12 years so maybe that trend will go soon and be replace by something else.

My girls have names that are pretty popular in uk but where we live not as well known, so they haven't really come across many other kids with their names, but when we visit the UK you hear them everywhere!

Baby Name Wizard is the place to check to see if you are being truely original.

hammeringinmyhead · 28/05/2019 22:52

There is a whole generation of names that I never ever hear for babies - my mum and dad's generation (50s-60s born). They aren't old enough to be "elderly" but they are names like Julie, Christine, Frank, Caroline, Stuart and Pauline. I reckon there aren't many Julies born now!

RebeccaWrongDaily · 28/05/2019 23:08

Juliette/Julia, frankie/francis/Frances/Francesca are common and i know a 3 little Christina's / Christy's

Nikobee33 · 28/05/2019 23:21

I have 4 children and they all have 3 letter names...Tia, Zak, Kai and Leo. I love how they all sound together x

hammeringinmyhead · 28/05/2019 23:43

Yes - those are all modernised or "vowel-ended" versions of the names I mentioned though. Christina and Julia are "prettier" sounding than Christine and Julie.
