Assuming we have a girl.

Juniper. My choice. Just fell in love with this recently. It's earthy, slightly different, and I could have June, Junie or Juno as nicknames, all of which I love. DH is Indian and Juni is an Indian name which I like as it's sort of tying together our cultures. June is a very special name for us too, and if we don't go with this name we had planned to use it for a middle name. Also I read about Saint Juniper and the story is lovely, which has made me like it even more!

Genevieve - DHs favourite. He just likes the sound. I do too. But I HATE the name Jenny and I'm not blown away by any other nicknames. My favourites would be Eve and Vivi.

We live abroad so could choose the nicknames here, but I'm worried that if we do return to the UK she might get lumbered with Jenny.

Opinions please!

My favourite is Juniper. DD2s middle name. I wish I’d just called her that for a first name, as I don’t love her FN at all

MerryMarigold · 28/05/2019 06:04

Genevieve will never be called that at home. I called my dd a name for the nickname she'd end up having. She's ended up with a different nickname and her full name at school!! Whilst I like her full name, I don't love it. I wish I'd used one of the other names I'd planned. I think Vivienne has a similar vibe and more easily slips into Vivi.

I like Juniper and especially all the connections. It has a hippyish feeling. I didn't know there was a Saint!!

veeboo · 28/05/2019 06:04

I'm in the UK and my instinct would be to shorten Genevieve to Ginny not Jenny. I love it!

OhTheRoses · 28/05/2019 06:09

Love Genevieve. You can't choose nicknames, they chose you.

Whoops75 · 28/05/2019 06:09

Genevieve i know is Gen

Not a fan of juniper, sorry

MerryMarigold · 28/05/2019 06:13

One other issue I have with Genevieve is whether it's pronounced with a 'J' like 'Jenny' or 'zh' the French way (as I think it's French name).

Whatareyoutalkingabout · 28/05/2019 06:19

That's another problem with Genevieve. We aren't pronouncing it the French way as we frankly can't say it perfectly and living abroad with a lot of other expat friends (including french) might complicate this.

I love Genevieve. Had a friend called Genevieve when we were kids and she was usually called Gen.

Not especially keen on Juniper, it’s a bit too made up for me. I like the nicknames though.

How do you feel about Georgiana? Similar feel to Genevieve but no possibility of Jenny as a nickname.

Sabato · 28/05/2019 06:53

(Or Georgette for similar reasons?)

BendydickCuminsnatch · 28/05/2019 06:56

Love Juniper!!

Treaclepie19 · 28/05/2019 07:08

Juniper 😍

Lobsterquadrille2 · 28/05/2019 07:31

Juniper. Fantastic name. The two Genevieves I know are both Evie which, though nice enough, is extremely popular.

Clubbercised · 28/05/2019 07:33

I prefer Juniper.

I like Genevieve too, but I do think she might get Jen / Jenny. I like Jenny a lot too, but you don't, so I don't think you should use it.

My ds's name sometimes gets shortened to something I don't like so much and it is annoying actually. I don't hate it, but I don't like it so much.

BlueMerchant · 28/05/2019 07:35

Genevieve nn Eve is lovely.
I don't like Juniper.

Teddybearhunter · 28/05/2019 07:51

Juniper you write with a long list of positives & Genevieve you write with negatives....

I feel like your heart has decided!

Teddybearhunter · 28/05/2019 07:52

Vivienne has a similar vibe & nicknames well to Vivi - is that one you’ve considered?

Teddybearhunter · 28/05/2019 07:53

Oops sorry @merrymarigold !

BrutusMcDogface · 28/05/2019 07:56

Juniper for sure!

I so know a Genevieve who is pronounced the french way and it sounds so much better than the English way, ie “zhon- viEHv” instead of “jenne-veev”. Would be a pain explaining to people all the time, though.

BrutusMcDogface · 28/05/2019 07:56

*do, not so!

SavageBeauty73 · 28/05/2019 07:59

I know two Genevieve's.

One is called Gen. One is called Viva.

LarkDescending · 28/05/2019 08:19

Neither is my cup of tea, sorry - but I do like June, and think it would travel well, and would lend itself to Juni(e) as a nickname which works in both your cultures.

In any event I think you should probably scrap Genevieve because it doesn’t sound as though you like it enough.

What’s the story of St Juniper which you like? Is it about cutting off the feet of a live pig?

rainbowstardrops · 28/05/2019 08:27

I love Genevieve nn Ginny.
I'm usually a big fan of more unusual names but I'm not really feeling Juniper. I quite like Juni though.

BlueWonder · 28/05/2019 08:33

Your post reminded me of a programme about Leonardo da Vinci the other day. This painting was mentioned as having juniper in the background as a play on the subject''s name - Ginevra:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginevra_de%27_Benci
If you stick with Juniper it is a nice thing to show your dd.when she's older. Or, as it seem's to be the Jun part of Juniper that you love (all the nn's), could you consider Junevra or Junivera? I"m not normally a fan of made up names but that still sounds classic, has the v sound your DH likes, could use all your nn''s, and has a great provenance!

MerryMarigold · 28/05/2019 09:05

Also don't think you could do Genevieve June as a name, so if you want June in there, call her June or Juniper. Or she may just be a George/ Jude anyway!

YouBumder · 28/05/2019 09:07

Both are awful sorry
