Evadne

Thoughts?

The nn Evie puts me off, but I really like this and like Evvie as opposed to Evie as a shortening. Is Evie/Eva inevitable?

I also like Ariadne but dd1 has a name starting with A and want to avoid same initials.

Thanks all!

Evadne was top of my baby name list 25 years ago but I had boys.
Love it and I've met a couple of woman named it since.

Apileofballyhoo · 23/05/2019 14:18

I've a feeling Evadne's nickname might have been Evvy. Can anyone remember?

Rainatnight · 23/05/2019 14:21

Yes!

ZebraKid71 · 23/05/2019 14:28

What's the chalet girls and hinge thing? I have never heard of either.. I've asked a few friends and none of them have, is it a well known negative association that I'm completely out of the loop on?

Really? Google Hinge and Bracket and see what comes up.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 23/05/2019 14:36

Apile yes, her NN was Evvy.

OP - Chalet School is a girls school story series set initially in Austria in the early 1930s. Evadne Lannis was one of the characters - American, daughter of a millionaire.

Apileofballyhoo · 23/05/2019 14:55

The Chalet School remains the only place I've come across the name Evadne. I'm trying to remember more names, you might like them, OP.

Constance (I think)

Thekla von Stift the quasi-Nazi, the Robin, who was really called Marya Cecilia (and whom I wanted to murder), Eustacia, Mary-Lou, Viola, Elisaveta, Lavender, Bride, Ruhannah (Ruey), Richenda (Rikki), Madge.

Not to mention girls called Tom, Jack and Dickie (who was called Delicia, I think?)

FartnissEverbeans · 23/05/2019 15:02

I love it, it’s a gorgeous name.

I have literally no idea what the Hinge & Bracket thing is

Cbeebiesrehab · 23/05/2019 15:04

I have no idea what Chalet or Hinge and Bracket are either?

Nice name and Evvy would be the go to diminutive I would use/think of. If you call her Evvy people will take your lead.

kenandbarbie · 23/05/2019 15:09

Makes me think of hinge and bracket too!! It's awful clunky sounding and old fashioned without any retro / granny cute appeal.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 23/05/2019 15:51

Hinge and Bracket

RuthW · 23/05/2019 15:51

Love it

GeorgeTheBleeder · 23/05/2019 15:57

Loveday is the Chalet School name that intrigues me the most ... It just conjures up such an other, distant world. Guess it would be unusable now ...

Evadne is rather fine - but grand. She’d need a lot of acres and a huge Fifth Ave apartment.

RaffertyFair · 23/05/2019 16:07

Sorry, I'm another old gimmer who instantly thought Hinge and Bracket. However that really isn't a problem in 2019!!

But that aside, I find it a rather clumsy sounding name I'm afraid.

ClashCityRocker · 23/05/2019 16:08

I've never heard of hinge and bracket either op!

Proseccofuelled · 23/05/2019 16:25

I thought it was a typo sorry

AnyoneButAnton · 23/05/2019 17:25

My autocorrect changes it to Evader, which would be tedious and is a sign of just how rare it is. Whereas Clytemnestra, to use a pretty rare example, autocompleted.

Fannybaws52 · 23/05/2019 17:27

I've always loved this name. Star

AnyoneButAnton · 23/05/2019 17:30

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinge_and_Bracket
Dr Evadne Hinge and Dame Hilda Bracket were a very successful mainstream drag act of the 1970s and 1980s. Few women of childbearing age will remember them now, but you’d get a lot of “oh, like Hinge and Bracket?” from grandparents and great aunts.

Fairylea · 23/05/2019 17:32

I have a few family members with the name Evadney. (My Mums side is from Georgia, USA). I like it. It get shortened to Eva.

Grinchly · 23/05/2019 21:24

This led me down a happy path of fond remembrance, and some googling.

Tragically, Dame Evadne died in the early noughties, Her dear friend Dr Hilda has retired to rural France and runs a rather lovely looking B and B, just as one might expect. I imagine there is the odd musical soirée available for the more discerning guest.

How anyone can be ignorant of the dear ladies AND chalet school makes me feel very sad.

And old.

But no. For Christ's sake do not call your child Evadne.

TinselAngel · 23/05/2019 22:15

I never realised Hinge and Bracket were blokes! Granted they were before my time but as PP says I remember my Dad referring to them.

pineapplebryanbrown · 26/05/2019 22:23

I love it!

Miljah · 26/05/2019 22:29

I normally hook up my judge pants at some 'out there' names, but Evadne(y) is both a great, but also real name
