Evadne

Thoughts?

The nn Evie puts me off, but I really like this and like Evvie as opposed to Evie as a shortening. Is Evie/Eva inevitable?

I also like Ariadne but dd1 has a name starting with A and want to avoid same initials.

Thanks all!

I'm so sorry but I can't even tell how to pronounce this?

ClashCityRocker · 23/05/2019 13:29

Is it ee-vad-nee or eh-vad-nee?

The latter would lend itself to evvy as a nickname.

It's a name I've not come across before, but I think it's a nice sound.

Marylou2 · 23/05/2019 13:37

Makes me think of Hinge and Bracket but then I think I’m getting old. I’m sure one of them was called Evadne. I really wouldn’t unless your quite posh but then I can’t imagine you’d care what strangers online thought of your child’s name. I much prefer Ariadne.

Afreet · 23/05/2019 13:37

I've only come across it as a Chalet School character, Evadne Lannis, who's one of the kerrazzzzy American stereotype-type girls. That may not bother you, of course.

Marylou2 · 23/05/2019 13:38
  • you’re, major grammar fail Blush
MrsMelonBall · 23/05/2019 13:38

Sorry... No...I can't even read/prounounce it

MikeUniformMike · 23/05/2019 13:40

Hinge & Bracket.
OK but there are so many Evas, Avas, Eves, Evies and Evelyns around.

Rainatnight · 23/05/2019 13:42

I love it (know it from the Chalet School) and think it’s both beautiful and really quite poncey. I don’t mind the latter.

JaffaCakesAreAMealInABite · 23/05/2019 13:44

Ooh PPs have beaten me to it - will always be a CS name to me. (FWIW - Evadne Lannis was a strong willed, feisty, fun character)

ThatCurlyGirl · 23/05/2019 13:45

Oh I love Ariadne it's one of my favourites along with Arrietty because I loved The Borrowers! I quite like matching initials Smile

JassyRadlett · 23/05/2019 13:46

Ah, Afreet, Evvy Lannis was quite a good egg in the end!

I like it but probably wouldn’t be brave enough myself.

Ces6 · 23/05/2019 13:46

Hinge and Bracket!

AnyoneButAnton · 23/05/2019 13:46

Too closely associated with Hinge and Bracket for my taste but not an objectively bad name.

Afreet · 23/05/2019 13:49

Am I confusing Evadne Lannis with Cornelia Flower? Or were they both crazy Americans of the type that exist only in English school stories, only Evadne had a millionaire father who handily bought up various Chalet school premises when the school moved on because of Nazis/drains/need for new picturesqueness of setting?

ChicCroissant · 23/05/2019 13:52

Also thought immediately of Hinge and Bracket when the thread title appeared in the active list - sorry!

TinselAngel · 23/05/2019 13:54

They both had rich Fathers but it was Mr Flower who bought up the Tiernsee school building and the San when they had to flee the Anschluss IIRC.

People will struggle to pronounce this name. As a child, I always read it as "Eva-Dane"

Rainatnight · 23/05/2019 13:57

While we’re thinking of Chalet girl names, how about Viola, Verity, Mary Lou, Eustacia...Any of those appeal? Grin

Apileofballyhoo · 23/05/2019 13:58

Another chalet school fan here! I think Cornelia's Dad came up with the money. Oddly Cornelia was old enough to be in school with Joey (as I remember) but then she was still in school for years afterwards. I was never sure how to pronounce Evadne. Exploits of the Chalet Girls and they blew up the lab or something. Cornelia is a nice name, OP!

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 23/05/2019 13:59

Alfeet you're confusing Evadne with Cornelia - Evadne was always a good egg whereas Cornelia definitely didn't Play the Game to start with but came through in the end and was Head Girl. Though I really felt for Cornelai - didn't her mother die when she was very young and as her father was a Very Busy Millionaire she just got dumped in a load of schools or something.

I don't actually really like Evadne as a name.

Knewyouwerewaiting · 23/05/2019 14:00

Never heard of it and don’t know how it’s pronounced.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 23/05/2019 14:00

Evadne's mother was Austrian, wasn't she? And yes, Corney's dad bought the school buildings when they shifted up to the Sonnalpe.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 23/05/2019 14:01

Ev-add-knee

I assume it's Greek?

MaMisled · 23/05/2019 14:01

Love love love it!

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/05/2019 14:01

If you like the -ne ending, what about Ariadne? Then you have Addy as a NN.

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/05/2019 14:04

Meant to say, I know a few families with names starting with the same letter and no one seems to care!
