Almost due and still undecided

Hi all,

I am due with baby girl #2 very soon and still can't decide on a name. We will potentially take a short list into the hospital but want to have a fair idea as I was pretty out of it at the end of my first labour and don't want to make a rash decision. I have been going between 3 names mainly but still not sure if any of them feel 'right'. Middle name will be Florence or Elena (both family names) My husband likes the nickname Bea and we both seem to like et ending names. We are in Australia so pronunciation may differ slightly but would still love to hear some thoughts.

Top three currently
Harriet nn Harri, Hettie, Etta
Beatrix nn Bea, Betty
Juliette nn lettie, Etta

I seem to go between Beatrix and Harriet and Juliette is one of my husbands favourites.

A new name that we are considering is Bridget but I just don't know if it feels too 90s? The other B/ette name we like is Bernadette but don't know if this is still too old lady sounding?

Rest of our shortlist
Abigail
Aubrey
Anastasia (would be higher on our list but our first is Elsie I worry it's too close to elsa and Anna)
Violet - I love V names (Genevieve/Vivienne but these were strong no'a from husband)

Would love to hear some thoughts. At this stage I am leaning towards Beatrix pronounced bee-uh-trix. The pronunciation is probably the biggest thing I'm worried about with Beatrix as I know ppl may also say bee-trix. My husband really likes the name Bridget but I just don't know. Picking names is so hard!

Your top 3 are the best by a mile & are all lovely
I do also love Bernadette

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 19/05/2019 00:48

Harriet.

Whoops75 · 19/05/2019 00:49

Juliette is my favorite

toomuchisneverenough · 19/05/2019 00:51

I love your top 3.
Bea is my favourite

Astronica · 19/05/2019 02:42

I love Harriet best, but also really like Beatrix, and think this is great as Elsie's sister.

But I do love Bridget too and love that it's such a strong traditional name and not much used these days. Bernadette, Abigail and Violet are also lovely. I love Anastasia but it seems a big and formal name when sister is Elsie.

Tavannach · 19/05/2019 02:49

Beatrix is my favourite from your list. I've never heard it pronounced Bee-trix, but I'm in the UK.
Also like Harriet, and I think it goes better with Elsie.

Tavannach · 19/05/2019 02:50

And Violet.

Watersnail · 19/05/2019 02:56

I like Violet and Abigail best.

SnipSnop · 19/05/2019 03:36

Juliette is my favourite (really lovely!), followed by Beatrix. I also love the middle name Elena. So chic.

Harriet is frumpy and Bernadette is bloody awful, but I'm Irish so my my perception of that name may be different to everyone else's. (it's really horrific though, please don't call a sweet innocent baby Bernadette).

Is it a thing in Australia that you need to decide on a name before leaving hospital? Seems like a lot of pressure. Can't you take her home and try out a few names (aside from Bernadette)?

AlliKaneErikson · 19/05/2019 04:18

I like Harriet (I have a Harri) and Abigail from your list.

Calixtine · 19/05/2019 07:05

Beatrix is so cool!

Icklepup · 19/05/2019 07:24

Love Juliette

userabcname · 19/05/2019 07:25

Definitely Beatrix or Juliette - gorgeous! If I had to pick one I'd go for Juliette I think but both fantastic choices.

Paultrybudget · 19/05/2019 07:31

Harriet

whatswithtodaytoday · 19/05/2019 07:32

Love your choices. Our baby was always going to have the middle name Violet, and could well have ended have ended up as Beatrix Violet or Abigail Violet if he'd been a girl, as they were favourites.

Only ones in not keen on are Bernadette and Bridget, they're both a bit middle aged.

jcq17 · 19/05/2019 07:46

I love violet

JoleneJoleneJoleneJoleeeeeene · 19/05/2019 07:48

Harriet here.

PollyShelby · 19/05/2019 07:57

I pronounce it Beer Tricks, doesn't everyone?

I like all those names, except Bernadette because I think Bernie isn't nice.

CupOhTea · 19/05/2019 08:17

I am not fond of Beatrix for some reason.

I love Harriet and Juliet, but not Juliette.

I'm trying to imagine all the names in an Australian accent and I think Juliet sounds the best.

So I'd go with;

  1. Juliet
  2. Harriet
  3. Juliette
  4. Beatrix

I know a Beth known as Bee too btw. I think it can work as a nn for any B name. Or are you pronouncing it Bee-ah?

Bethany
Bethan
Bryony
Blythe
Betsy
Betty

Jaz32 · 19/05/2019 08:41

I think Elsie & Harriet sounds best.
I do like Juliette and Beatrix as well tho.
I also like Abigail and Violet. Really like Anastasia but I think it's very long compared to Elsie?!
Do not like Bridget or Bernadette.

Clownfish123 · 19/05/2019 08:50

I like all of your top 3 choices. Both Harriet and Juliet are on my list. My favourite at the moment is Harriet. I don't think the pronunciation of Beatrix will be a problem.

Please not Bridget, it's so old fashioned it would almost be cruel. I would hate to he called Bridget at my age (30's) let alone as a child now. It's not due a comeback yet.

PollyShelby · 19/05/2019 09:03

I've remembered why in not keen on Bridget, at school the one there was Frigid Bridget.

PotatoCity · 19/05/2019 09:45

I love Harriet, it’s on my list too, but I do worry about being unable to avoid the nn “Hattie” which I’m really not keen on (I love the shortenings you suggested though).

I like Juliette (though would also go for Juliet personally).

I weirdly love Beatrice but not keen on Beatrix at all!

From the rest of your shortlist I only like Abigail.

LarkDescending · 19/05/2019 10:01

Juliette is the standout choice for me (though I prefer the Juliet spelling). Elegant, classic, international, timeless.

Nothing wrong with Harriet but it’s just not a personal favourite of mine.

Beatrix seems to be having a “moment” but I just can’t fall in love with it!

Not keen on your other choices.

NuffingChora · 19/05/2019 10:04

Harriet, Juliette, Abigail and Violet are all great. Beatrix is a big no from me, it’s just so stuffy.
