Oan?

I saw it written this way once before and I wasn't sure wether it was a proper but unusual spelling of it or just an 'individual' spelling.

Ioan is a name.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/05/2019 21:49

I personally wouldn’t spell it Oan. In Ireland It’s spelt Eoin quite a lot

NoSquirrels · 16/05/2019 21:50

Welsh variant is Owain.

Never seen Oan before! Sure it wasn’t a typo?

Maybebaybe · 16/05/2019 21:52

In Ireland it is also spelled Eoghan. I have never seen it spelled Oan but it's phonetic (if that's the right word) so you shouldn't have too much trouble with people grasping it. (I would prefer Oan to Eoghan)

Proseccofuelled · 17/05/2019 08:53

I’d assume that was pronounced Own

daisypond · 17/05/2019 09:02

Not seen Oan . But I know an Eoin and an Owain.

nwybhs · 17/05/2019 09:06

Oan?

Come up to Scotland 'put yer shoes oan' 'coffees oan the table' 'whit shift are ye oan the moran?'

It's more own than Owen.

palahvah · 18/05/2019 08:47

Ioan and Owain are both pronounced differently from the anglicised ''Owen", I believe.

CupOhTea · 18/05/2019 08:58

I've seen Eoin (in Ireland) and Eoighann (sp? In Scotland). Never Oan.

Ian? Due a comeback?

TeacupDrama · 18/05/2019 09:14

Eoghainn is a Gaelic form of John as is Eoin, Owain I believe is Welsh fro John too. I have never seen Oan anywhere, Owen and Iain are anglised versions of Owain and Eoghainn

ravensrivers · 18/05/2019 09:44

I'm already in scotland Nwybhs but I hadn't thought of that Grin

The handwriting wasn't very clear so it may well have been Ioan and I've read it wrong.
How is that pronounced?

What about Oran/Oren instead.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 18/05/2019 10:01

Ioan is pronounced yo-an
