A small choice of girl’s names...

Due in Jan so obviously far too early to know gender. For a boy we have chosen Macsen with 2 family middle names. It’s a Welsh name, we don’t live there but have many connections.
For a girl we are completely stuck and have different taste. Middle name will be Amelia (again, a family name)
Front runners are-
Iona (pronounced Yona - will this cause confusion?)
Rowena (again, will the eena or enna ending be an issue?)

Some possibilities/ones dh hates-
Eliza
Meredith
Eirlys

Very open to names I may have missed!

I would have thought Iona would be pronounced I own a

I like Rowena and Meredith

Prefer Elise to Eliza

Haz1516 · 11/05/2019 08:38

Iona I would always pronounce as eye-oh-na, so could cause some confusion. Rowena I'd say as row-ee-na. I do like both names though, in the way I'd pronounce them.

Eliza is probably the 'safest' choice. Meredith is s bit old lady to me.

Calatonia · 11/05/2019 08:48

Rowena is definitely pronounced "eena", it would only be "enna" in English if it were written "Rowenna".

Iona, on the other hand is usually pronounced Eye-Owner, or Ee-Owner so if you want it pronounced "Yona" there is likely to be confusion.....

Bronwen?

Prettyvacant2003 · 11/05/2019 08:52

Meredith is lovely.

MyNewBearTotoro · 11/05/2019 08:59

I have only heard Iona pronounced ‘eye-own-uh’ but it always sounds to me too close to ‘I own her’ which puts me off. Rowena I would pronounce ‘Ro-ee-nuh’ which is the only pronouncuation I’ve heard of.

I love Eliza. Meredith is nice, a bit old-fashioned but so are lots of popular names so I don’t think that matters. Merry is a sweet nicknames. Eirlys is lovely but won’t be pronounced easily/ correctly if you’re outside of Wales.

Jins · 11/05/2019 09:01

Iona was my front runner for a girls name. We lived in Wales at the time, it was quite popular, and every one was pronounced Yona.

The alternate pronunciation did not appeal and it was quite apparent when we crossed the border that more people would use it so we took the name off the list.

Rolyboo · 11/05/2019 09:04

Thanks for your replies, confirmed my worries!
Went to school with a Rowena pronounced enna but I certainly wouldn’t change the spelling of it to get that ending.
I think ‘Yona’ pronunciation is the welsh variant as I believe it’s taken from the word for January (hence why I like it!)
Bronwen is a good suggesting but surname is a B and sounds far too cutesy!

Would Menna work?

Thinkle · 11/05/2019 09:19

Name you have missed... Edith? It’s already in Meredith...

Rolyboo · 11/05/2019 09:22

LOVE Edith but I currently teach one. It also has a similar sound in it to surname. Oh do like Enid but dh hates.
Not keen on Menna, can’t say why!

Rowena is lovely

Ricekrispie22 · 11/05/2019 09:43

Rowena Amelia just doesn’t sound right. Iona Amelia isn’t much better.

Cerys Amelia
Seren Amelia
Gracelynn Amelia
Ffion Amelia
Fflur Amelia
Emlyn Amelia

TurquoiseAndPurple · 11/05/2019 09:47

How about Anwen?

MumUnderTheMoon · 11/05/2019 10:03

Arwen
Caron
Eilonwy
Ellis
Glynis
Gwendolen
Isolde
Tegan
Wynn

Rolyboo · 11/05/2019 10:15

Isolde is also on my list, but not DH’s!
Thanks for suggestions, more to think about but none jumping out at me.
Realise Amelia isn’t the best suited middle name but we’re definitely going to use it. Rose is another family name so possibly Rowena Rose Amelia for example.

Just remembered DH also put forward Adeline (but again-pronunciation!!!! I like line not leen)

I also have a massive soft spot for Elsa but realise I can’t use that so found Alisa as an alternative
