hi AGAIN I know I keep creating threads but I just want to find a nice name for DD which is due soon.
(last thread was on name Isabella).
our (final) shortlist is:

Isabella
Etta
Mila
Josephine
Callie

I'm really not sure which one I prefer. I LOVE Isabella but am looking for something I bit more original and not dated so not sure thats the right way to go.

anyway what do you think of these names? which is your favourite? and why?

thank you so much :) I promise this will be the last thread!

I love Etta, considered it for our daughter x

Aozora13 · 10/05/2019 20:08

@oohbubbles1 maybe your friend is me Grin thank you, anyway!

My friend’s advice for choosing a baby name is to imagine shouting it across the park and see which one you’d cringe the least at!

I really like Josephine. So many lovely nn options.

If you love Isabella though go for Isabella or you'll probably come to regret it

HeyMicky · 10/05/2019 20:25

I have a Josephine. It gets lots of compliments. She was Posey for a long time but now (4) insists on her full name. Lots of other nickname options. Works in a few languages. And mine is hilarious

ManeChanged · 10/05/2019 20:28

I know twin gretas who are known as Etta. Both under two so it may be gaining popularity.

I adore Josephine. What nickname would you use?

MikeUniformMike · 10/05/2019 20:29

Isabella - lovely but there are lots of Isabels and Isabellas around. Not keen on Izzy.
Etta - no. Sound like Ate a.
Mila - no
Josephine - yes, lovely, but Isabella is nicer. I like Joss as a nn.
Callie - Cally in nicer but seems like a nn.

BikeRunSki · 10/05/2019 20:30

Josephine, by miles and miles

Anerak · 10/05/2019 20:33

Josephine is a lovely name - for a child and an adult. Elegant, classic and uncommon

Peachbubble · 10/05/2019 20:34

I like Callie the best. Not keen on Josephine or Etta, Isabella is nice, but so popular atm.

Bellatrix14 · 10/05/2019 20:38

Isabella is nice enough but very, very popular. I don’t like Izzy as a shortening though.
Etta I think is lovely. Not too ‘twee’ like a lot of popular names for girls.
Mila is also nice, but the pronunciation issues would bug me. I also have a feeling it’s going to become very popular in the next couple of years. As you can tell, this is something that bothers me, but you might not be as fussed!
Josephine I am really not keen on, sorry. I think it’s quite clunky and old fashioned, and not in a good way.
Callie is sweet, but it sounds like a shortening of a longer name and not a name in its own right, to me anyway.

Good luck making a decision!

AudacityOfHope · 10/05/2019 20:56

Thinking along the lines of Josephine, how do you feel about Jean?

I work with a Jean in her early 20s and she really pulls it off. Also know a Nancy-Jean which I like despite usually hating hyphens.

Etta-Jean Smile

tararabumdeay · 10/05/2019 21:01

Calilope and call her Callie. Look up Callipoe it's an amazing name. I think it sounds like cal I o pee rather than calie ope ee.
Cadie/Arcadia.

Cassie/Cassidy

Be proud of your new person and give them every chance you can for the future of you both.

TatianaLarina · 10/05/2019 21:57

Josephine.

Ex28 · 10/05/2019 22:16

Etta is my favourite. I’d use it if I had a daughter.

DramaAlpaca · 10/05/2019 22:23

Josephine is the nicest IMO. It's elegant & classy & suits all ages. The same can be said of Isabella but it's ridiculously popular.

Mila is a bit insubstantial & will date. Callie is similar. It's sweet but sounds like it should be short for something.

I don't like Etta, it's hard sounding & sounds more like a abbreviation. It only works for me as a diminutive of Henrietta.

TildaTurnip · 10/05/2019 22:24

I am never sure how to say Calliope...

I like Callie and Etta.

I think Josephine is really lovely. A classic but not over used at all.

RickOShay · 10/05/2019 22:30

I really like Callie. Have you thought about the spelling Kali? She is a Hindu goddess, so definitely a name in its own right.

MercyBodle · 10/05/2019 23:18

I like Josephine best from your list. And there are so many nn options - I love Posy, Jo and Joey, and there's also Josie, Sephy, Seph, Fina, Fifi.

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 10/05/2019 23:24

I havent read the full thread only your OP so not sure of others advice.

I like mila but prefer it pronounced myla, but I think if you love Isabella you should go for it - it's a nice name, and it has been around for centuries so I dont think you can say it will date? (Catherine of aragon's mum was called Isabella and she was alive in the 1400s for example :))

YourWinter · 10/05/2019 23:38

I love Josephine, with a one-syllable middle name. Also love it shortened to Josie, or Jojo - or, as someone I used to know, Sephie.
I know two women, both 50s, called Edwina. One is always called Weeny, the other is Dweenie, yet I'd have thought Eddie was the obvious short version.

GreyBirds · 11/05/2019 00:15

Etta I don’t like because it immediately makes me think of Etta James and I don’t really like names that I only associate with a very famous person, if you see what I mean?

I think Callie is nice but being short for Callista or Calliope, which are both lovely.

Don’t love Mila because I immediately wonder which way to pronounce it - Myla or Mee-la. Most likely to date, imo.

Josephine and Isabella are lovely. Classic but pretty.

Whoops75 · 11/05/2019 00:20

1 Isabella - beautiful classic
5Etta - not a fan
2 beautiful modern
3Josephine- Don’t like, love Joanne
4Callie- more a nickname imo

IncrediblySadToo · 11/05/2019 00:26

Callie - by a long way.

Mila - you/she’ll spend her whole life ignoring people saying my-la or correcting them. It’ll drive you nuts.

Not now Josephine! Dislike Josie too.

Etta - too terrorist

Isabella is fine, but MASSIVELY over used.

Marlena1 · 11/05/2019 00:41

Mila or Callie are gorgeous. Love Carey tooGrin

Sophronia · 11/05/2019 05:19

Don’t like Mila at all. Trendy, celeb name that will date.

Josephine is lovely, as is Isabella.
