Would you use a name that is from a popular tv show?

Thinking of names for a possible son, and I cant get past a name I love, and I like no other names. However, it is a name which if people watch the show will immediately make the connection. He's not a major character, but I've not heard of any other person with that name!
Would you eyeroll and judge? Or would you not even think about it?

Good that you have excellent recall Weeping. Not everyone will but at the end of the day it's the parents choice.

I suppose people post here for feedback they wouldn't get in real life due to politeness, so I answer accordingly.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 02/05/2019 12:33

but why? It's simply remembering how to spell a name, the language of origin, real or made up, is irrelevant. You said the lack of 'u' would trip you up. I Googled Aniqa and it's the Urdu spelling, presumably in Urdu 'u' doesn't have to follow 'q'. Nowt to do with excellent recall, frankly it's just manners. I know which friends are Clare and which are Claire. It's not hard.

You're coming across as a bit of a Little Englander with that explanation.

Okaay..
As they say in Klingon:
Quapla'

pikapikachu · 02/05/2019 12:38

Back to your question- I think people will
assume that he's called Jack N and older people like me thinking of Jackanory (and I love Thrones)

MrsFoxPlus4 · 02/05/2019 13:03

I know a Khalessi 😂

pikapikachu · 02/05/2019 13:30

Hope Khaleesi is a pet.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 02/05/2019 13:53

not sure what point you think you're proving there, Wench, other than you don't know how to spell in Klingon - it's qapla Grin

AGoodWench · 02/05/2019 15:23

No point proving attempted.

Just a wee jokey sign off on the conversation.

However it does maybe show you have a better chance of reproducing an unfamiliar set of letters than I have! X

AGoodWench · 02/05/2019 15:27

It really was a small comment on the name. In the broad sweep of things spelling comes way down after the sound of the name, possible shortenings and any associations it may have.

AGoodWench · 02/05/2019 15:34

If it's not an issue for op then it's not an issue.
Now it would be for me as I am in a family with members who struggle to spell consistently.

Antonin · 02/05/2019 16:11

Jaquen would be pronounced Jakwen so not the same name as Jaqen.
Could go for Jacques, pronounced in Shakespeare’s time as Jake-wes.
If you want another version use Jaxon with aJack for nn. Just learnt we have one in our family and I nearly choked on my coffee.

FannyFeatures · 02/05/2019 16:16

I have a common name that has 2 standard variation spellings, think Tracy/Tracey, it drives me bloody mad that I have to remind people which spelling I use atleast once a day.

Even if I sign an email at the end the replies often get it wrong anyway despite it being right there in front of them. My Gran quite often gets it wrong even now as to close friends so I really wish it was just as easy as showing people once!

MrsFoxPlus4 · 02/05/2019 17:29

pikapikachu Nope shes 11 years old Smile

CloserIAm2Fine · 02/05/2019 20:18

If you’re going to call him Jackie anyway why not just call him Jack?

I don’t watch GoT, I know a few names like Theon, Joffrey, Cersei, Arya, Khaleesi but wouldn’t instantly know Jaqen. So it’s not as bad in that respect. But it’s a name that will always need to be spelled out and that people will remark on

fluffiphlox · 02/05/2019 20:29

Well I was third on this thread and made a facetious comment about GoT.
Why not just call him Jack?

MonstranceClock · 02/05/2019 21:06

Sorry for not replying, I've been at uni all day.
I don't like Jack on its own, and I dont like Jackson as there are hundreds where I live. I don't see spelling as an issue, I have a name that no one can ever spell unless told and it's never been a problem for me.
I think I'm going to go for it. I had another browse through names today and I can;t find any name that I like even half as much!

Go for it, Monstrance it's a great name!

Sessy19 · 03/05/2019 06:44

I think it’s lively. And as a nod to your late husband, perfect. I watch GoT, and although I have terrible baby-brain I wouldn’t make the association immediately 😊

Sessy19 · 03/05/2019 06:45

*lovely

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 03/05/2019 08:43

go for it. If I had a baby boy I would totally call him Cassian and I don't care if it's a made up name from Rogue One, The Best Star Wars Film Ever.

ABitOTT · 03/05/2019 12:40

I like the name. Sometime we overthink about these names & I'll be honest I've don't think my name has made any difference in my life or the person I became. If you like the name, you choose it for your baby boy.

HoratioNightboy · 03/05/2019 15:16

It's a nice-sounding name, OP. There is precedence with other spellings; three examples going back to 1771. So perhaps it's the spelling that's "made up", not the name itself!

You get this a lot with fantasy names - there are websites dedicated to ancient name suggestions, usually Celtic or Anglo-Saxon, for gamers etc. to choose for fantasy world characters. When they break into the mainstream, other people assume the names are made up, when some have actually just been out of use for a few hundred years. Sounds like Jaqen might be one of them.

PropagandaMachine · 03/05/2019 19:25

Good name. GOT connection aside, I like the look and sound of it, too.

MumUnderTheMoon · 03/05/2019 22:16

I think Jaqen is a great name. If you want something that shortens to Jackie there is also Jacobie.

howwudufeel · 03/05/2019 22:22

It’s really interesting how people have names their dc after film stars or Film characters throughout the years. Tracey became popular after a character from a film and Wayne started to be used after John Wayne became a popular star. There will be a lot of people named after Game of Thrones in years to come.
