Would you use a name that is from a popular tv show?

Thinking of names for a possible son, and I cant get past a name I love, and I like no other names. However, it is a name which if people watch the show will immediately make the connection. He's not a major character, but I've not heard of any other person with that name!
Would you eyeroll and judge? Or would you not even think about it?

I've never watched it, so have no idea what the character is like, but I like the name.

TurquoiseAndPurple · 01/05/2019 21:19

I've never seen GOT. I think it's a lovely name!

TheCraicDealer · 01/05/2019 21:27

I know a Theon and a Khalessi. I mean whatever floats your boat but they'll really date. But Jaqen was a minor enough character it won't be as tied to GOT as those two, or Arya. I'm also not keen on people who are massive fans of franchises like that giving their kids names inspired by them rather than picking a name for the child, iyswim. It's like they're an extension of your hobby rather than a person in their own right.

Are you planning a baby with a new partner? How would they feel about using the nickname of your late DH?

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 01/05/2019 21:29

I was hoping it was going to be Tyrion to be fair!

MonstranceClock · 01/05/2019 21:32

No I don't have a new partner, so no worries there.

I actually know a female called Tyrion, who was born long before game of thrones came about! She's never been phased by it.

Ooh, Jaqen is lush, number 1 in my GoT top totty chart.

Not really sure it’ll work, though.

MonstranceClock · 01/05/2019 21:45

On the other hand, he might get a load of smart-arses saying "a boy has no name" to him...

I'm hoping that by the time he and his friends are old enough to watch game of thrones, it will probably be long forgotten!

Iv just had my baby and named her an unusual name, however one that was very well publicised in the news.

this news item was 6 years ago and id hoped long enough ago to not get many comments etc.

but unfortunately there has been and its annoyed me a bit.

i think a name from GOT will get a lot of eye rolls/comments etc but if you want the name, who cares?

i love my daughters name and know that in time people will get over it and hopefully the news story will become less talked about.

the same will happen with GOT.

Smellslikemiddleagespirit · 01/05/2019 22:43

I'm planning on calling my new dog Tyrion!

I think Jaqen is a great name, and the character himself was rather hawt.

museumsandgalleries666 · 01/05/2019 22:48

Of course you should use a name you love. Who cares what anyone else thinks. Especially as it shortens to your late husbands nickname. Go for it.

Smellslikemiddleagespirit · 01/05/2019 22:50

Made up tv names just sound shit and silly

Nothing wrong with a name from fiction, and all names are "made up"; where do you think they come from?

JM Barrie made up Wendy for Peter Pan, and it caught on as a mainstream name.

FannyFeatures · 01/05/2019 22:52

I've never seen Game of Thrones and wouldn't have a clue how to pronounce it...

At a guess i'd say Jackwen or Jacken (the box :o)?

naughtynorm · 01/05/2019 22:53

I wouldn't, I'd call him Jack or Jackie. I think GOT will be around for a long time yet with a prequel in the making plus it's got a bit of a cult following.

I really liked the name Theon after hearing it on the show but he's not the best person to be named after.

Heard lots of little Aryas in the last few years.

FannyFeatures · 01/05/2019 22:56

JM Barrie did not make up the name Wendy, he coined it from a nickname given to him for the character but the name was is use long before then!

PinkPupZ · 01/05/2019 22:57

I'm not sure. Isn't Jackie more a middle aged womans name?

flingingmelon · 01/05/2019 22:58

DS is named the same as a character from a cult show from the nineties that I knew nothing about.

Everyone once in a while it comes up but not enough to be an issue.

I'd wait a decade before you go near a Game Of Thrones name though.

User10fuckingmillion · 01/05/2019 23:02

Ayra is a real name btw everyone

Smellslikemiddleagespirit · 01/05/2019 23:04

For those unfamiliar with the original...

Yum!

MonstranceClock · 01/05/2019 23:12

oh no, Jaqen the box could be an unfortunate nickname!

Smellslikemiddleagespirit · 01/05/2019 23:15

I doubt many children these days have even heard of a jack-in-the-box. That's a toy consigned to history now, surely?

MonstranceClock · 01/05/2019 23:19

No you're probably right. It's not enough to put me off the actual name anyway I think.

MumUnderTheMoon · 01/05/2019 23:25

I wouldn't judge plenty of people use names from their favourite shows, books and movies. If I had another daughter I'd definitely use Lyanna and hope she was as kick ass as her name sake.

Theweasleytwins · 01/05/2019 23:31

I know someone who named their ds Castle, after the tv character. Its not even his real name it is his pen name!

RavenLG · 01/05/2019 23:44

Isn’t Khalissi (sp) not her actual name too, it’s likr a family name (never watched GOT).

A friend of a friend recently called her kid Bowie. Not after David Bowie mind. They didn’t even think of him at the time the name just came to them Hmm

Not her name or family name. It had been her title, as wife of the “Khal”.
