Margaret - what do you think?

This is a name with great significance in my family so I would love to honour my DGrandmother by using it -
But what connotations does this name give to you? Is it too old fashioned? Or a beautiful classic?

Long overdue a revival. I blame Thatcher for that. Plenty of famous Margarets other than Thatcher, though - Smith, Atwood, Drabble, Forster, Mitchell (Gone with the Wind), Gyllenhaal, Hambling, Mead, Ashcroft, Court, the list goes on.

It's not my favourite name but it's a classic, easy to spell, easy to pronounce. Means pearl.

MollyHuaCha · 27/04/2019 21:28

I like it.

tilder · 27/04/2019 21:28

Love it. Especially Maggie (then I know two lovely Maggie's, so Thatcher doesn't matter to me).

Margo = Leadbetter.

lazymare · 27/04/2019 21:29

No

OverMoon · 27/04/2019 21:33

I love Margaret! I love Maggie and Peggy as nicknames with Margaret on the birth certificate, and I love Margot as an alternative or a nickname.

I do have slight Thatcher connotations though which would probably hold me back from naming my own daughter that. But if I heard someone else had a new baby named Margaret, my reaction would be “I’m so jealous!”.

OverMoon · 27/04/2019 21:34

Also makes me think of Princess Margaret who was quite glam in her day

Singlenotsingle · 27/04/2019 21:38

Lovely, and you can use Meg, Maggie, Margo ...

mrsdolittle · 27/04/2019 21:42

I hate it.

It's my first name but have always used my second name. I was named after my grandma but even my parents never called me Margaret and used my second name.

That said I quite like Maggie or Meg.

brizzlemint · 27/04/2019 21:51

I like it. She'll take all the milk though.

Ikeameatballs · 27/04/2019 21:52

Not keen on Margaret but I do like Maggie. I know a lovely Maggie so for me, even from the mining heartlands of the North East, it has broken away from Margaret Thatcher.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 27/04/2019 21:55

I like it. Meg or Peggy are sweet.

challengeyourreality · 27/04/2019 21:58

Thank you for your replies. I'm pleasantly surprised by how positive reactions have been although it does seem to be a name of extreme reactions - love it or hate it.

I love it too.
But how do you get Daisy as a nickname for it?

AdaColeman · 27/04/2019 22:32

Because Daisy is the English name for the flower that is Marguerite in French.

Wandastartup · 27/04/2019 22:38

Mine is 11 now. Known as a diminutive. I love it still!

Megan2018 · 27/04/2019 22:41

We are having it as a middle name, as its a family name. I don’t love it enough as a first name though personally.

girlsname · 27/04/2019 22:43

Sorry can't stand it, and it will always have Thatcher connotations

Megan2018 · 27/04/2019 22:43

@Summersunshine2
Daisy has long been used for Margaret, especially in my Grandmothers era. I think it comes from Marguerite as in the flower, known as a Daisy.

Whizzler · 27/04/2019 22:44

It's my mother's name and she's never been overly fond of it. My mum is ace but even still I don't think I would use this name for a daughter's first name. Middle name, absolutely.

RebeccaCloud9 · 27/04/2019 22:47

Ugly granny (a la aunt Bessie ads 'Marrrggggrriittt') or traveller.

Whizzler · 27/04/2019 22:48

Maggie Gyllenhall is a Margalit rather than a Margaret. I only know this because I remember an interview where she said that she only discovered this when she looked at her birth cert before getting married. Frazzled my brain that she reached 30 something without her parents mentioning it!

tilder · 27/04/2019 22:51

Margalit is better than Magrat.

Classical spelling all the way.

Lavenderblues · 27/04/2019 22:52

I think of Margaret Thatcher.

I much prefer Margherita

bridgetreilly · 27/04/2019 23:36

I don't love it, but I like it, and I do like both Meg and Maggie, so I think it's a good choice.

Sophronia · 27/04/2019 23:45

I like it, it’s an underused classic. Would like to see it have a revival.
