Edgar or Edmund?

I don't really like any boys names, but dh loves these two. I don't have a problem with either and think Eddie is quite sweet.

I just don't have a preference of one over the other so looking for opinions, or any issues with either? They both sound fine with our surname.

Thanks!

I prefer Edgar. Edmund will forever make me think of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and he’s not a nice character!

NoBaggyPants · 27/04/2019 14:06

Both are setting him up for years of bullying.

JustAnotherMNUserPassing · 27/04/2019 14:07

As NoBaggyPants says. If you're keen on Eddie why not either go for Eddie or Edward? Smile

Musmerian · 27/04/2019 14:08

My middle son is called Edmund. He’s now 19 and he likes it and so do I. Despite negative literary connotations (Narnia and King Lear) it’s classy and flexible, unusual without being try hard. Can be shortened to Ed or Ned. Good Old English name. Edwin is another possibility. Not so keen on Edgar even though he’s the good guy in Lear.

Musmerian · 27/04/2019 14:09

Why would those names get you bullied? My son’s experience as an Edmund has been wholly positive.

ZebraKid71 · 27/04/2019 14:17

Why would they get you bullied?

I know 5 little Edwards, so that is a big no for me, and we don't want a nickname as a full name - Eddie is fine as a nn but definitely not for us as a full name.

I prefer Edgar.

What on earth is tease worthy about these names?! I can see a William possibly teased with Willy, but Edgar or Edmund?

How about
Vincent
Quentin
Magnus
Conrad

People don't get bullied because of a name, kids get bullied and bullies will pick on anything, if it's not a name it'll be their shoes or their haircut or their accent.

I prefer Edmund of the two, although he is a bit of a shit in TLTWATW.

Exactly. Also, kids are far more accepting of different names than many adults on these threads!

RuthW · 27/04/2019 16:13

Perfer Edgar but what about Edwin. It's my fav boy's name.

Horseshoe1 · 27/04/2019 16:35

Edgar! He’s a good guy in Lear and Edgar Allan Poe is a cool namesake. Also a nicer sound than Edmund I think.

CaitlinsYellowSocks · 27/04/2019 16:40

I like them both! I have an Edward, which I love even though it's popular (we only know one other of the same age who is always called Eddie).

DH vetoed Edmund because of Blackadder and TLTWATW, but I don't think either of those associations would get a child teased. And I love Edgar.

bridgetreilly · 27/04/2019 17:50

I love both! But I think I have a slight preference for Edgar. Great choice.

megrichardson · 27/04/2019 17:57

Have you been reading King Lear, OP?

GingerbreadTeen · 27/04/2019 18:04

There's also Edison. I know one who is a teen. Quite cool, not many about. He does go by Eddie though!

lljkk · 27/04/2019 18:06

I love Edgar. However I cringe at Edmund, Edwin or Edward.
I almost love Alfred (or Fred). Can't abide Alfie.
(Nought as queer as folk?, I know). I'm voting 4 Edgar, anyway.

I guess it means Edgar Allan Poe to me (nobody is cooler).

DramaAlpaca · 27/04/2019 18:06

Edmund is very nice, but Edgar is hideous. So on that basis, Edmund.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 27/04/2019 18:13

I actually love both of those names, and Edwin.

As PP have said, kids get bullied because other kids decide to bully them: if it's not the unusual name because they're called Tom, it'll be the specs and if they don't have specs it'll be that they're bad at football and if;s not that it'll be something else.

In my experience, kids with unusual names don't notice as small DC, wonder WTF their parents were thinking in their early teens, and then decide they like them after all by their late teens/early twenties.

TeaForTheWin · 27/04/2019 18:16

Edmund.

Or just call him Poe xD

Calixtine · 27/04/2019 18:39

I love Edmund and really like Edwin, but for some reason dislike Edgar. It sounds sort of oily and unctuous to me.

Whizzler · 27/04/2019 19:42

I like the gothic edge that Mr Poe gives to the name Edgar. Edmund is okay too though. Edwin is dweeby.

PetraRabbit · 27/04/2019 19:51

I love Edmund.

Valkarie · 27/04/2019 20:25

I love Edmund, but ds1 was going through the Peppa Pig phase when I was pregnant with ds2. Edmund elephant is so irritating! Otherwise I would probably have used it

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 27/04/2019 22:17

I can't see why Edmund or Edgar would get a child bullied. Am I missing something.
I prefer Edgar. Its strong and masculine yet still gentle and sweet. Its what i call a good boys name.

Tillygetsit · 27/04/2019 22:19

I dislike both but love Edwin.
