Arthur too popular?

countrystumpkin · 25/04/2019 15:23

Have a son called Ivan - was my grandfathers name and we absolutely love it - we never hear it in a park and obviously it has a special meaning.

I’m pregnant again - don’t know what we’re having yet, but we think a girls name is set on Bonnie.

We love the name Arthur but I’m worried it’s too popular compared to Ivan. I wouldn’t want him to be known as ‘Arthur B’ at school etc.

Other names we like are Quinn, Rowan, Hugo, Louis and Rafe for boys.

Any suggestions or help?

I like Tommy, Arthur, Joss, Silas.

ParisWilton · 25/04/2019 15:33

It was the 19th most popular boys name in 2017, so imo, yes it is popular. Boys names are often used more frequently than girls names too (there were over 1000 more Olivers registered compared to Olivia - both no1 names) so there's more chance of Arthur being Arthur Surname.

Seth
Marlon
Peter

I love Rafe, it’s on my list.
I also like Arthur but was put off by the sudden popularity.

Other names that come to mind;

Ralph
Wilf
Ernest (Ernie)
Rupert

RuthW · 25/04/2019 16:16

Yes there are loads of Arthurs at the moment. Ernest is lovely and I've only heard one other of those.

countrystumpkin · 25/04/2019 16:29

Love Wilfred or Wilf but a family friend has just named their son that. I know nobody owns a name but don’t think I could use it 😬

I don't know any young Arthurs, so not overly popular. I like it.

Tiramisu1 · 25/04/2019 16:41

I love Ivan! Cool, classic and not overused.

I'm not so keen on Arthur. It's quite trendy and seems to be rising in popularity.

I love your suggestions of Quinn and Rowan.

We have Quentin, which I also love.

londonloves · 25/04/2019 16:43

It is very popular, also Ivan and Arthur together makes me think of David Cameron’s children.

Disappearedtothe80s · 25/04/2019 23:10

I love Hugo but that also growing in popularity.

countrystumpkin · 26/04/2019 08:03

Didn’t know David Cameron had an Ivan and an Arthur 😬

Love Hugo - but BIL cats name. Strange but don’t want them thinking he’s named after a pet haha.

Love Quentin/Quinton which is probably what Quinn would be called if we chose that name

What about Fred or Stanley?

countrystumpkin · 26/04/2019 08:23

I don’t know if it’s a regional thing but I don’t know any Arthur’s (South West) but I know about 5 Fred’s/Freddie’s etc

As well as Max, Oscar, Theodore, Noah it’s super popular

countrystumpkin · 26/04/2019 09:28

If Quinn - do you think Quinn on its own or Quinton?

OP posts:
an1997 · 26/04/2019 09:31

I have a Noah and although it's super popular which is was really against to begin with I just fell so in love with the name that it doesn't matter anymore. My little one is such a little Noah and I've not heard of anyone else called Noah at any of the baby groups we have been to so far either.

countrystumpkin · 26/04/2019 09:44

See an1997 - this is my feeling. I was always against a top 20/50 name, but I’ve loved Arthur since I was a child and have got more and more irritated as it’s got more popular. Maybe I need to take a leaf out of your book and just stop fretting!

Ivan is a great name. I agree - Quinn is a great name that goes well with it. I also like the suggestion of Otis.

I'm not so keen on Arthur as it's become quite common/trendy and I don't like the short form Art or Artie at all.

Lavenderblues · 26/04/2019 11:56

Yes, there are loads of Arthurs under age 10 around here.

I think Quentin is a great suggestion and Quinn a lovely nickname.

Tiramisu1 · 26/04/2019 12:10

We have a Quentin. I think that spelling is much more common than Quinton (eg. think Tarantino, Blake, Letts etc) and you can still shorten to Quinn.

pikapikachu · 26/04/2019 12:23

I have a son who was in a class with 2 Olivers , 2 Sams and 2 Arthurs and 2 Harry. All of them used a different version of their name so they were Ollie, Oliver, Sam, Sammy, Arthur, Art, Harrison and Harry This avoided the Oliver B situation

The poor teacher Shock

ShadowLine · 26/04/2019 13:01

If you really love the name Arthur then personally I’d use it regardless.

One of my DC has a top 10 name - it was a favourite name of mine for years. I worried about it being too popular but eventually decided I’d regret not using it.
And we rarely meet other children with the same name despite it being a popular name, I think because there’s such a wide range of names used these days.
