Rufus, Felix or Leo - too posh?

We are expecting our first child, and cannot agree in a name from our shortlist above. I'm not British, and love the name Rufus, but my (British) husband thinks it's too posh (he also thinks kids would call him Rufus the Doofus). Similar with Felix... He's very concerned about the class-connotations of names and wants something that can transcend class barriers. I'm less bothered as I don't really see that!
Leo seems to be less class-specific, but worried it's too popular atm. Theo is also a possibility. I don't like particularly long names which would get shortened.

Rufus does sound a little 'posh' and perhaps ripe for bullying.

Felix and Leo however don't sound posh at all and are both great names imo. Leo is very popular so it depends if that worries you. Theo also a lovely name!

What's wrong with having a posh name Confused? I honestly don't understand? Surely a person makes his name, not the other way round.

CocoLoco87 · 17/04/2019 07:38

I love the name Rufus! I have no idea if he'll get Rufus the Doofus as I wouldn't have thought that in my head. Just make sure he isn't one, I guess! Grin

CocoLoco87 · 17/04/2019 07:39

And same as pp, I'd prefer Theo to Leo.

isntthatalwaystheway · 17/04/2019 07:40

Love Rufus! But think Leo and Felix are so common now x

Lobsterquadrille2 · 17/04/2019 07:41

I absolutely love Rufus and know two, neither of whom (as far as I know) have ever been bullied because of their name (one adult, the other is 12). I love Felix too - both these names were on my list. Leo is pretty common these days (and was my parents' dog).

BillywigSting · 17/04/2019 07:41

Rufus I think does have scope for bullying.

Leo is definitely not posh, I know some very firmly not posh little Leos. It is a nice name though.

I love Félix though

TulipFever · 17/04/2019 07:43

I don’t personally know any Rufuses, but I can assure you that Felix and Leo are solidly upper working class/ lower middle class in these parts.

WoollyMummoth · 17/04/2019 07:45

Rufus is shocking, don’t saddle a kid with it. Leo,Theo and Felix are lovely.

MerryMarigold · 17/04/2019 07:46

I think you both have to agree on a name. It doesn't matter if the name is /isn't 'posh', it matters if your dh wouldn't feel comfortable with it. Some teachers dislike certain names if they associate them with particularly challenging students.

To me, Rufus is super posh and also a bit of a dog name. But it's not my kid! My dh and I liked v different names, took us ages to decide but we were both happy.

Tiramisu1 · 17/04/2019 08:31

Felix is a well known cat food in the Uk.

GlossIt · 17/04/2019 08:48

Rufus is a dogs name, and Felix a cats name.

For that reason go for Leo.

Strugglingtodomybest · 17/04/2019 08:51

I only know one Rufus and he's a posh adult. It suits him though and I like him so I now like the name.

Felix is most definitely a cat's name and Leo is awful.

MercyBodle · 17/04/2019 08:52

I really don't see why any of these names need come in for bullying. You can make up some silly rhyme about any name. I love all 3 of those names, with Rufus being a special favourite.

BlueMerchant · 17/04/2019 08:59

Rufus is awful. Sounds posh and 'wet' and 'dorky'.
Felix is a no
Leo is lovely.

VoyageInTheDark · 17/04/2019 09:12

I love Felix. I dont think it sounds posh.

Tiramisu1 · 17/04/2019 09:14

If your partner finds Felix and Rufus too posh, surely that's what matters.

Icklepup · 17/04/2019 09:45

Love Rufus

swiftfox · 17/04/2019 11:21

Ha, it's send like Rufus is a bit of a marmite of a name. I like Theo too but it's more awkward in my native tongue.

I don't particularly care about the "poshness" of a name as I've not grown up with names being associated with class, but my husband seems more sensitive to such things!

I don’t like Rufus at all, but Felix and Leo are both lovely! x

MikeUniformMike · 17/04/2019 11:56

None of them are posh. They are all popular.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 17/04/2019 13:37

I love all those names and have a Felix myself. All good choices. I agree that Leo is very popular at the moment. I don't think either Felix or Rufus make it into the top 100 names.

JellyCat1 · 17/04/2019 13:41

Of all the boys my two boys know I can only think of one Leo! I'm always surprised when people say it's really popular. I don't know any Felixes. I love both. Rufus is ok.

theruffles · 17/04/2019 13:46

I like Rufus; I know of two, one who goes by the nickname Ru which I think is quite sweet.
