I really love the name Ava but worried it's just too popular. Would you call your baby a name that is so popular?

If not, any similar alternatives you could suggest?

Too overused where I am. I love Cora but DH wouldn't let me have it.

Everythingmagnolia · 14/04/2019 23:28

My DD is Ava, she is 12 so was named before it became hugely popular. Its a beautiful name and if you like it you should just go for it.

DramaAlpaca · 14/04/2019 23:30

It's popular because it's a beautiful name. If you love it, use it.

Alternatives could be Ada or Ida, but neither are as nice. Or Eva, but that's very popular too.

Bumblebeesmum · 14/04/2019 23:50

Popular these days is nowhere close to what it used to be as parents strive to be different far more - even the top names will be few & far between. Ava is a gorgeous name.

Aquamarine1029 · 15/04/2019 00:45

Far too popular in my opinion. I wouldn't even think of using it.

zen1 · 15/04/2019 00:48

If I liked it, I would go for it even if it was popular. I think Ava’s a nice name.

SpinneyHill · 15/04/2019 00:50

As long as your surname isn't Banana, use it. It's lovely

Madmarchpear · 15/04/2019 00:56

I know loads but undeniably pretty. I think hyphenated far too much though.

SpinneyHill · 15/04/2019 01:01

I had a Mia before Kate Winslet and it wasn't in any top name lists, 15 months later it was in all of them(thanks Kate).
Names being in fashion is not as important as loving the name

Crushedvelvetcouch · 15/04/2019 01:01

Its a nice name but its far too popular for my tastes.
There are prettier names which are less common imo.

How about Sylvie, Cleo, Dinah, Lila, Cecilia etc?
Similar feel but much less common.

Kokeshi123 · 15/04/2019 01:22

There is basically nothing wrong with a popular name! But if YOU don't want a popular name, don't choose Ava. Simple really!

NutMeghan · 15/04/2019 08:25

I only have met a couple. Not too popular imo

LittleMissMummaBear · 15/04/2019 09:45

My daughter is Ava so I’m probably biased but...it’s such a lovely strong name that will carry a girl through life. If its popular than it must me for a reason! Also, where I live, I know NO Ava’s! Not one!! Popularity is based on area. Go for it, you may regret it! xx

ReginaGeorgeous · 15/04/2019 13:03

It's a lovely name. It was on my shortlist when my four year old was born, but we had the same reservations about it being too popular. We went with Freya instead which was just outside the top 20 at the time and we've met more little Freya's than Ava's.

MindyStClaire · 15/04/2019 13:14

Love the name, but I know very few children and I know a few. It would put me off, but that doesn't mean it has to put you off. If you love it, go for it. It's a great name.

MikeUniformMike · 15/04/2019 13:32

Overused. I don't like it.

LashesZ · 15/04/2019 13:38

Biased as my DD is named Ava. I chose it for its meaning which was linked to her birth. I think it's lovely and only really popular when hyphenated.

blondie87 · 15/04/2019 14:48

It's a beautiful name and I know about three toddlers called it. It depends if very popular bothers you but it's gorgeous!

loveshinealight · 15/04/2019 15:24

I did like this name but it's become so overused now that I'd consider it quite dull.

Sophronia · 15/04/2019 16:51

It’s a nice name but very popular.

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 15/04/2019 16:55

She's already Ava in your head, lovely name, I would call her that however popular at present.

BlueMerchant · 15/04/2019 16:58

I wouldn't. Too popular.

JimJamJarmusch · 15/04/2019 17:01

I think it's a lovely name - but didn't use it in the end (2 years ago) because it was becoming so popular. There are names I would still go with even if popular, but if have to absolutely be in love with them. I like Ava a lot, but not quite enough to get past the popularity. I think that's the weighing up you have to do!

birdgal4848 · 15/04/2019 22:05

Beautiful but overly popular, she won’t be the only one in her class.

Usuallyinthemiddle · 15/04/2019 22:09

It's lovely. There are 8 Avas in DS's KS1 though!
