Why can no-one pronounce my daughter's name!?

So my baby girl is almost three months old, we named her Alyssa. Probably about 75% of people have mispronounced her name and it's really starting to get to me now! I don't want her having to go through life having to correct people all the time.
How would you pronounce Alyssa?

Its an incredibly pretty name but if you are going to choose something unusual then you are being very unreasonable being disappointed people don't know how to pronounce it. Unless you are going to change her name you will have to get over yourself sorry! I am almost 50 and I have never met anyone with the same name as me and I have only seen my name on about 3 people in the press. I don't expect people to know how to pronounce my name, I have never been offended at people getting it wrong..in fact I have never corrected people and I don't even notice if people are getting it right or wrong now - I know they are referring to me! A huge benefit of an unusual name though is when I do spell it people remember it because its so unusual.

CapeDaisy5 · 13/04/2019 19:44

a-LEE-sa

Only because a girl from the Philippines in my primary school had this name and pronounced it this way. I've never met another one.

CapeDaisy5 · 13/04/2019 19:47

Nobody says it like that. They do clearly

mothertobe789 · 13/04/2019 19:55

@ittakes2....get over myself? Bit rude. I was just asking the question as in my opinion it's not that much of an unusual name, thanks for your input though.

Ah liss ia

GirlInTheDirtyShirt · 13/04/2019 19:59

Haven’t RTFT but I’d say Aleesha.

megletthesecond · 13/04/2019 20:00

Ah-lissa.

Alienspaceship · 13/04/2019 20:01

I wouldn’t have a clue how to pronounce it. Op, you are being completely unreasonable expecting everyone to ‘just know’ how you would like it pronounced. After you’ve told them, fair enough.

Yabbers · 13/04/2019 20:04

But loads of people are calling her a-lee-sa...driving me mad! X

Is it a regional thing? Like the preemark/preyemark thing?

Wheresmyvagina · 13/04/2019 20:05

The LY sound is often pronounced 'lee'. With the double S it should indicate a short 'liss' sound but as it's not really a well known name it's hardly surprising that people will make a stab at pronouncing it and some will get it wrong.

Cheerybigbottom · 13/04/2019 20:11

I would read it as you have explained but the ly and sometimes just a y can have the ee sound in English so it's easy to understand why some people might not pronounce it the way you want.

stellarfox · 13/04/2019 21:02

I pronounce it the same as you. Alyssa is lovely

bridgetreilly · 13/04/2019 22:50

Wait, some people say Preemark?!!

NotMyUsualTopBilling · 13/04/2019 23:02

Ah-liss-ah.

I know 3 and it was on our shortlist, didn't use it but i still love it :)

As an aside the whole Pree/Preyemark thing seems to be a Scottish/English divide amongst the people I know, much like the ah/alldi pronunciation.

PCohle · 13/04/2019 23:06

I think pree-mark is an Irish thing, no?

Sorry, off topic.

llangennith · 13/04/2019 23:14

We say Preemark in Wales too.
I'd say Alissa because of the actress Alyssa Milano.
Why didn't you spell it ALISSA?

Weathermonger · 13/04/2019 23:24

I would pronounce it A-liss-a but my friend with the same spelling pronounces her name A-leesh-a

RuthW · 13/04/2019 23:40

A-lisa

Notwiththeseknees · 14/04/2019 07:08

A-lee-sa from me too I'm afraidSmile

Tiramisu1 · 14/04/2019 07:44

Alyssa is clearly pronounced as it's written:
Al-iss-ah

brizzlemint · 14/04/2019 07:53

A-LISS-A

She'll have fun with Alexa when she's older.

ZebraKid71 · 14/04/2019 14:44

I think if people took the time to look at the make up of the letters they'd say A-liss-ah, due to to double S. However, aleesha/alicia is so popular they probably don't read it properly.. Surely after one correction it shouldn't be an issue.

Pompello · 14/04/2019 17:13

These days Primark say their name is pronounced pr-eye-mark but anyone who lived in NI in the 1980s will remember the ads pronounced it pree-mark. 'Pree-mark got a whole lotta things for Christmas...'

Pr-eye-mark is an affectation and I will have no part in it! Grin

brizzlemint · 14/04/2019 17:17

I think if people took the time to look at the make up of the letters they'd say A-liss-ah

Names like Clarissa and Melissa aren't pronounced like that are they? I thought -ssa names would be just ss-a when they are pronounced? Clarissar/Clarrissah would sound very odd.
