Why can no-one pronounce my daughter's name!?

So my baby girl is almost three months old, we named her Alyssa. Probably about 75% of people have mispronounced her name and it's really starting to get to me now! I don't want her having to go through life having to correct people all the time.
How would you pronounce Alyssa?

Ah-lissa. How are you pronouncing it?

Aragog · 13/04/2019 18:59

The child i know with this name is called A-liss-a(h)

mothertobe789 · 13/04/2019 18:59

Thank you everyone! Yes I pronounce it A-liss-a, which I thought was fairly obvious. But loads of people are calling her a-lee-sa...driving me mad! X

Or is it like Aliza?

Sculpin · 13/04/2019 18:59

A-liss-a

Heyha · 13/04/2019 18:59

Ah-liss-ah, main stress on liss. Although thinking about it it's a name/child I've never taught, pretty though.

Smoggle · 13/04/2019 18:59

So I'd pronounce the Y.
I think you're pronouncing the Y in the wrong place though...

PointlessUsername · 13/04/2019 18:59

A-Liss-A would be how i would pronouce her name.

Aragog · 13/04/2019 18:59

Alicia - I have heard this pronounced A-lee-sh-a(h) and A-liss-i-a(h) so would need to check with said child first.

Sexnotgender · 13/04/2019 19:00

I’d pronounce it Ah-Liss-ah.

How would you like it pronounced?

BiscuitDrama · 13/04/2019 19:00

I’d say Ah LISS ah with ah as in apple.
I might misread it as Alysha or however that is spelt.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 13/04/2019 19:01

I'd also say a (as in apple) liss a (as in apple)
I do know someone whose name is pronounced a lease a though. Not sure of spelling for that - might be Alyssa

daisypond · 13/04/2019 19:01

I don’t see how it could be a-lis-i-a. The y is in a completely different place.

ShallICompareTheeToASummersDay · 13/04/2019 19:03

Dad has a friend who has the same name but begins with an E instead of a A. It’s pronounced E-lees-a. 🤷🏻‍♀️

donquixotedelamancha · 13/04/2019 19:05

loads of people are calling her a-lee-sa

Nobody says it like that. It's a common name. They all know how to pronounce it, it's just that they have all ganged up and decided to take piss.

Redtartanshoes · 13/04/2019 19:08

Applez?

Branleuse · 13/04/2019 19:09

i would have thought Al-ee-sa, but seems its not that way.

I think if you want everyone to get a name right first time, then you need to choose a really common or popular one

IncrediblySadToo · 13/04/2019 19:10

Ah liss ah IF I HAD to say it without hearing you say it first.

This is a name that has loads of threads on here. Every parent thinks their way is the best/only way.

You need to either get used to correcting it just accept there will be variations, but mostly by people who don’t matter.

Roomba · 13/04/2019 19:13

I knew an Alicia who pronounced it A-liss-ia. She was forever pissed off with being called Aleesha, yet that is the more common pronunciation these days, it seems.

I would say Alissa in this case, too.

pottyteethfacehands · 13/04/2019 19:13

A (as in apple) - lee - sa

Smoggle · 13/04/2019 19:14

To be fair, Alissia is the standard/traditional pronunciation of Alicia.

MillicentMartha · 13/04/2019 19:16

Ah LISS a

pottyteethfacehands · 13/04/2019 19:16

Posted my answer before reading the thread so as not to influence my reply.

Now see that it should be 'A-liss-a' - so I'm one of those annoying 75% - apologies OP!

lordofthefries · 13/04/2019 19:19

I think it’s fairly obvious how to pronounce it. But I think a lot of the Alissia, Alicia, Elica names get confusion over how to pronounce

bilbodog · 13/04/2019 19:38

If you will use a name, with a spelling like that, then this is the consequence. You should have called her ann - easy.
