What do you think is more common Ellie or Ella? My cousin is also expecting a baby girl and likes both these names but she can't decide.: my personal preference is Ella

I prefer Ellie. I know a lot of Ellas but it is lovely name

e22aed247a · 09/04/2019 10:58

I prefer Ellie even though both are nice. I’m not sure why but to me Ella is overused whereas Ellie, which just as common, seems timeless.

SummerHouse · 09/04/2019 10:58

Ella definitely.

PepsiLola · 09/04/2019 11:00

Ellie comes across as more of a nickname than a name?

Elle and Ella seem more formal and Ellie a NN

I do like Ellie, maybe a NN for Eleanor, but Ella is better

sawyersfishbiscuits · 09/04/2019 11:03

Ellie used to be vv popular 15 years ago but now it seems to have been replaced by Ella.
I actually really like Nella or Nell.

Isabella NN Ella is nice.

All lovely names though.

My cousin recently named her daughter Ella and I just feel like it's not a finished name. When talking to her I call her Ella Ella, like Ella alone isn't enough?! Don't know if that makes sense 😂

ItStartedWithAKiss241 · 09/04/2019 11:18

I don’t like Ella very much as I class it in the same group as Arabella, Isabella etc.
Ellie is quite nice and could be a nick name for lots of nice names (Elliot for a girl like Scrubs, Eleanor) and sits well with most middle names Ellie Grace, Ellie Rose x

DarlingLittleBabyName · 09/04/2019 11:34

I prefer Ella because it is more of a stand alone name for me, Ellie is a bit nicknamish x

MikeUniformMike · 09/04/2019 12:59

Ella

Tiramisu1 · 09/04/2019 14:08

They're both incredibly popular and will probably sound dated soon. Is there no other name you love?

BlueMerchant · 09/04/2019 14:11

Both too popular but at a push I'd say I prefer Ella.

Twickerhun · 09/04/2019 14:14

I know way more Ellie’s than Ella’s

HoldMyGirl · 09/04/2019 14:16

I prefer Ella, but to add even more confusion.... Grin

... what about Elle?

Flicketyflack · 09/04/2019 14:18

I personally know more Ellie's so would go for Ella.

abcriskringle · 09/04/2019 14:23

I think Ellie is a lot more popular so prefer Ella.

Theoldwoman · 09/04/2019 14:28

Ella. More common for a very good reason.

Beautiful, classic, timeless.

hihellohihey · 09/04/2019 15:08

You didn't ask for this opinion at all (sorry to be one of them) but I really like Elin

Sophronia · 09/04/2019 18:43

Ella

CottonSock · 09/04/2019 18:45

Ella

Pemba · 09/04/2019 19:43

Ella is lovely, and it is more of a proper name, like pps said. You can always name her Ella, then use Ellie for short if required. You can't do it the other way round!

mummymonica · 09/04/2019 20:45

@HoldMyGirl I keep saying Elle but she just doesn't seem to want it😂🙈 I think she's going to go with Ella... but I bet it will be something totally different by the time she's here🙈

Yeah I agree Ellie is nowhere near as popular as it was 20-15ish years ago, my sister was born in 2002 and there were heaps in her years groups etc, she has two good friends called Ellie.

I am in the baby groups now and there are far more Ellas than Ellies.

I much prefer Ellie (irrespective of popularity), you could always put Eleanor on the birth certificate.

cptartapp · 09/04/2019 20:51

I know several of each. Not keen tbh. Eleanor is lovely in its entirety. Or Erica, much less common.
