What do you all think?

I prefer Augustus but Augustine is nice too. Don't think it's too out there at all. Love Gus and Auggie as nicknames

PlatypusLeague · 06/04/2019 20:51

I think it's fine.

Dre3000 · 06/04/2019 20:56

Thanks for your feedback. Which do you prefer?

Augustine
Sonny

The surname has two syllables and goes well with both

I'd say they're at opposite ends of a spectrum op. I'd go Augustus if that's an option. Augustine is very Roman emperor.

Tiramisu1 · 06/04/2019 22:05

Augustine/Augustus is a million times nicer than Sonny!

BlueMerchant · 06/04/2019 22:09

Love SonnySmile
Don't like Augustine at all.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 06/04/2019 22:14

Isn't Augustine a female name?

VirginiaWolfHall · 06/04/2019 22:15

Love it - for a girl (I thought it was a girls’ name Blush)

VirginiaWolfHall · 06/04/2019 22:15

Cross post thatmustbenigelwiththebrie pleased I’m not alone!

Shmoople · 06/04/2019 22:17

I'd expect a little Augustine to swagger into soft play with a mitre and crosier.

Sonny would have a spliff and a skateboard.

Very different names Grin

shazkiwi · 06/04/2019 22:19

I think Augustina is the female version. I prefer Augustine to Sonny

BlueMerchant · 06/04/2019 22:27

I so love Sonny I'm surprised it's seen as inferior to Augustine!
I always thought it was individual and a bit boho. I am shocked it's seen as chavvy ShmooShock

ladamanera · 06/04/2019 22:30

Mate. This has pregancy horomones written all over it. Sonny is jolly and American but is going to get “Sonny Jim” all the time if in Britain. If in the US my thoughts are no good here.
Augustine is a medieval boy’s name but will have your son having questions for a while about whether its female or male if that matters to you (Augustin is a more recently used french boys name and could neuter (sorry linguist joke) that a bit). But they are really different in terms of sound etymology religious reference and aspiration. Not that that matters, but is definitely an unusual pairing- like saying “shall I eat Ortolans or grits for breakfast”. I would love to see the rest of your list!

Shmoople · 06/04/2019 22:30

Oh I don't think Sonny is chavvy, I think it's trendy/modern I just picture it belonging to a skater teen, with floppy hair (and a spliff). Whereas with Augustine, I picture the saint!

Personally if I absolutely had to pick one of those names I'd probably go with Sonny as Augustine is just too much.

Veterinari · 06/04/2019 22:39

Augustine sounds feminine, clunky and ugly

CaitlinsYellowSocks · 07/04/2019 00:00

I've got a friend with an Augustine and think it's lovely! Very Catholic and traditional (as are they) but he goes by Gus most the time.

If you like Gus, Angus/Augustus could be slightly less out-there alternatives.

Sonny sounds more nicknamey to me. I don't dislike it but it is a very different style of name as PP have said.

FraAngelico · 07/04/2019 00:04

I quite like Augustine, but I think if you’re in the UK, it will code as ‘Catholic with devout parents’. Which may or may not be a signal you’re happy with. Sonny could not be more different.

Tavannach · 07/04/2019 00:11

Yes, I think Augustine is a step too far. Maybe as a mn if you love it.
Sonny or Augustine? Balonz?

daisypond · 07/04/2019 07:41

I think Augustine is a bit much. And I think people may expect a girl too. August, Augustus, Augustin are better. Sonny is just terrible, though. So demeaning and belittling. Augustine is better than that.

Tiramisu1 · 07/04/2019 08:14

I agree - for a boy Augustus, August or Augustin would be better. The e at the ends makes it feminine and a bit much.

I don't like Son or Sonny.

Disfordarkchocolate · 07/04/2019 08:17

Love Sonny.
I knew one once and he was a special child, he just had something about him. Loved the name ever since.

Petalflowers · 07/04/2019 08:21

I met a ten year old (?) Augustus the other day who was lovely. Really like the name.

Sonny, not so keen on, although I have met a couple. To me, it always seems like a nickname, rather than a bona Vida name. Ie. A name parents would colloquially call their son, even if his name was Fred or Charlie. Ie ‘ Come on Sonny, time to get your coat on’.

RocketSurgery · 07/04/2019 08:23

Augustine is fine if you’re Jacob Rees-Mogg. Sonny is much more Kerry Katona.

gettingtherequickly · 07/04/2019 08:23

Augustine over Sonny by a country mile, but Augustus over Augustine.

JustAnotherMNUserPassing · 07/04/2019 08:24

Sonny is much nicer!
