What do you all think?

... Anyone with any knowledge of Augustine would not think it was a girl's name (or a Roman emperors Hmm). Gus for short is lovely. Not keen on Sonny.

BertrandRussell · 07/04/2019 08:27

Oh god, if it has to be one of those then Augustine. But Sonny is one of the worst names possible. It’s like naming a child Youngfellermelad.

SelkieRinnNaMara · 07/04/2019 08:28

I have known 2. One Irish and one French. V unusual.

It is a girl's name though @lauraloop1516

starzig · 07/04/2019 08:32

Not a fan, but like August

Topofthehills · 07/04/2019 08:35

I know an Augustine, usually called Gus. Never occurred to me that it might look feminine, given there's St Augustine!

I also know an Austin, which is the mediaeval version of the same name.

Both a million times better than Sonny, imo, which would be fine as just a cute nickname but would be a tough name to pull of all the time.

BertrandRussell · 07/04/2019 08:36

There are about 8- 10 Augustines every year.. no girls until 2017, shen there were 3.

I suppose it could be pronounced to sound like a French girl’s name - AU-gus-teen. To rhyme with Clementine.

SlidingDoor · 07/04/2019 08:51

Love August shortened to Auggie

Augustine is too much if your child is an average uk baby.

Sonny is a name the Rooney’s would use.

BorsetshireBlew · 07/04/2019 08:52

August or Augustus are fine. Augustine is a step too far

starzig · 07/04/2019 09:31

Ugh. You have just put me off August sliding door. Didn't think even the English could shorten that one.

Peachbubble · 07/04/2019 09:46

August or Augustin, with Gus as a nn, not Auggie though. Sonny is awful.

Starryskiesinthesky · 07/04/2019 10:38

Augustus is more masculine to me than Augustine but like both. Not keen at all on Sonny.

RoseMartha · 07/04/2019 10:51

Augustine much better than Sonny

Dre3000 · 07/04/2019 12:18

Thanks for the feedback everyone. These are my oh's picks (he has hipster leanings). My favourite name for a boy is Gabriel or Gabe for short. Hoping the feedback from you lovely people might make him see sense. We're not religious by the way, atheist here, I just seem to like names with religious connotations for some reason. Could be the hormones

@starzig - you clear haven’t read the book Wonder or seen the film of the same that was a released year. Auggie v famous character.

I follow a woman on Instagram who has me ideal life and just gave birth to a gorgeous August. Maybe that’s why I like it as it’s not my sort of name usually.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 07/04/2019 12:40

All very nice. I like Augustine the best. Augie or Gus for short. But sonny is nice with a 70s sonny and Cher vibe but I can see where some posters are coming from. Sonny either lives in a boarding house at bedeales or down at the local housing estate. Gabe makes me think of depression era America which is of course not a bad thing. Very Steinbeck.

daisypond · 07/04/2019 12:54

Gabriel is super.

Tiramisu1 · 07/04/2019 13:24

I prefer Augustus over Gabriel. Don't like Sonny.

TatianaLarina · 07/04/2019 20:39

Augustine is def a girls name. I know a French Augustin.

Our plumber is called Sonny.

Gabriel is far nicer than either.

HarrietM87 · 07/04/2019 20:44

tatiana st Augustine is one of the foremost saints and philosophers in the catholic faith, pretty famous and definitely male.

Calloway · 07/04/2019 20:51

I don't much like Augustine but it's better than Sonny by about a hundred miles. Gabriel is nice.

vegpatch · 07/04/2019 21:05

Love them all and don't think of Sonny as chavvy, LOVE Gus as short for Augustine. Gabe and Gus were both top 5 choices for DS1 (ended up being Eli).

TatianaLarina · 07/04/2019 22:08

St Augustine’s name was Augustinus, being Roman.

Etino · 07/04/2019 22:21

Def a male name, Gus is great.
