What do you all think?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I also thought it was a girls name? Because of Celestine and Albertine which are girls names ... Aren't they? Blush

AlliKaneErikson · 08/04/2019 03:27

Were you inspired by that rower in the Boat Race? It certainly stood out (but not necessarily in a good way, sorry!). It’s distinctive, though, and as suggested above Gus is a good nn.

“Because of Celestine and Albertine which are girls names ... Aren't they?”
Yes they are-and Augustine to rhyme with those is a French girl’s name. (3 three baby girl Augustines in the U.K. by the way) The English boy’s name is Au-GUS-tin.

LadyKylieShagworthy · 08/04/2019 08:11

I would also presume Augustine to be female with the male version Augustin.
This is probably because I spent many years in France.
It's like Valentin/Valentine
Célestin/Célestine
Clement/clementine
Aurélien/Aurelie

Sonny feels like a nickname, but I like Gabriel ( not Gabe).

CharlyAngelic · 08/04/2019 09:17

I would avoid Sonny .

polarpig · 08/04/2019 09:29

I would think that Augustine was a girl even though the saint was male. As for Augustus - no! It makes me think of Augustus Gloop and given that Charlie and the Chocolate factory is a popular book and film it's not a link that will go unnoticed - all 3 of my DCs read it in school and at home.

BertrandRussell · 08/04/2019 10:06

“I would think that Augustine was a girl even though the saint was male”
Why?

CaitlinsYellowSocks · 08/04/2019 11:49

Gabriel is my favourite, FWIW. It was on one list but didn't go with our surname.

Beautiful name. Not too common, but not too out-there. A classic but feels contemporary. And even though it's an angel name, I don't think it reads as religious in the way Augustine does - I wouldn't assume anything about the parents' faith.

polarpig · 08/04/2019 13:17

It just sounds like a girl's name with the -ine ending like Clementine.

porridgeplease · 08/04/2019 19:54

Augusta is the female alternative, you don't hear it very often!

SelkieRinnNaMara · 08/04/2019 21:23

Augustine is used for a girl in France.

Bumblebeesmum · 11/04/2019 11:27

Both terrible but no name is loved by everyone

DarlingLittleBabyName · 11/04/2019 13:00

hmm much prefer August (love) or Augustus. Nns Auggie and Gus are cute too x

AnnaNutherThing · 11/04/2019 13:04

Augustine would immediately make me think of Saint Augustine. I'd think it was odd on a girl because of that.

I quite like Gus.

AnnaNutherThing · 11/04/2019 13:14

Sonny was a nickname in my mum's family so it has that association for me.

Antonin · 11/04/2019 13:37

St Augustine (anglicised version) traditionally brought Christianity to England when he converted King Ethelbert at Canterbury. Definitely a male name. Augusta was the most common feminine form and was quite popular in Victorian and Edwardian times.
Sonny will not suit anyone over a certain age. In my experience in the past it was mainly used in place of the American junior for a son with the same name as his father.
Gabriel is ok and the best of your suggestions OP.

citychick · 11/04/2019 13:43

Both Augustus and Augustine are lovely IMO, but yes, you will be channelling Catholicism.

The male version is present in a few of our family members and comments are made about the religious leaning. Sadly.

SmithyDarlingLetsDoShots · 11/04/2019 13:46

How about Santino with Sonny as the nickname like in The Godfather movies.

NaturWilde · 11/04/2019 13:48

Absolutely love it. I also have a Gabriel and may use Augustine for my next one!!

Not keen on Sonny.
