Strong girl names - suggestions please!

We're expecting DD1 in a few months and would love some suggestions for strong girl's names.

We have a double barrelled surname so don't want anything too fussy - DH says that growing up the DB surname led everyone to think he was "posh" and so doesn't want the same assumptions to be made for her.

All suggestions greatly appreciated!

Funnily enough when you said a 'strong' name I immediately thought the letter r, and in your shortlist a lot have an r. I thought as 2 other posters mentioned Cara or Cora and the name robin comes up a lot on these threads but nobody ever seems to choose it the end. The name Marian has about 30 derivatives if you look it up in a name book eg muireann, murron, mirenne etc. maybe look up a letter you like to focus in on.

Have you considered Cerys or Carys?

I love all your first names except Cleo.

Nia is perfect by itself, do you know the legends of the name? Some great myths with Nia in them. (Or Niamh, in Ireland - same character).

Love all your middle names too, except Coco.

I definitely don’t think Hazel is dated! I know a hazel my age (mid 20s) and she’s fierce. Self-starter, strong, entrepreneurial, great advocate for women’s rights.

howmanyleftfeet · 30/03/2019 01:07

I know a little Hazel (just the one!), It's a great name IMO.

NameChange30 · 30/03/2019 04:09

Fanny?! Confused

Belle is not a strong name, it means beautiful.

I like Helena though (or Helen).

Not Fanny 🤔 or Belle.

Someone did mention Farryn which I thought was interesting but is it too out there....?

Helen isn't jumping out...

I'm really trying to get my head round Hazel - problem is a friends mum is called Hazel and I think it's making me view it as an 'old' name. Good to know others don't agree.

@howmanyleftfeet - Cary's etc is very pretty feels very Irish to me and we have NO links at all. Funnily enough I'm not sure about Cleo and Coco so they will probably come off the list.

And no I don't know the legend of Nia - will look it up!

Thanks all, really good suggestions and pleased to hear the general consensus is there are no mega clangers on our list.

We have a baby Cleo and I love it so much for its strength and character. It’s a vintage name but sounds current at the same time and is well known without being too out there. It is a stand alone name but can be short for Clementine if that suits. Cleo Laine the jazz singer was a Clementine I believe.

Lorna
Fallon
Rebecca
Julia

Really like the suggestion of Stella above. Also like Zoe from your list.

TheRedFox · 30/03/2019 11:09

I like Stella on paper but when I say it I can only think of the beer so think that rules it out.

Astrid

Nina

I love Cleo.

Beatrice but with the nn Bea prounouced Bayah? As in the Italian. Sound very strong.

Moonflower12 · 30/03/2019 11:38

I have a Zara and a Sophie. Both are spirited and strong willed.

MamaDane · 30/03/2019 11:44

Thora is very nice. Personally love the name and here (in Denmark) it's not a short version of Theodora but just a name on its own, basically a female version of Thor. We pronounce it like Torah though Grin

I don't know any strong sounding English names personally.

StripyDeckchair · 30/03/2019 11:50

Estella?

TeaForTheWin · 30/03/2019 20:44

Yeah I was thinking more Disney princess Belle rather than the name actual meaning. I mean, she was quite a brave cookie.

Hey a few years ago there were plenty of Fannys about...I suppose there still are, but not in the same way xD
