Strong girl names - suggestions please!

We're expecting DD1 in a few months and would love some suggestions for strong girl's names.

We have a double barrelled surname so don't want anything too fussy - DH says that growing up the DB surname led everyone to think he was "posh" and so doesn't want the same assumptions to be made for her.

All suggestions greatly appreciated!

Here is the lengthened shortlist with some of my initial thoughts. Obviously any names on the first list could also be used as a middle name.

First Names
Lara
Marina
Hazel - too dated?
Cora
Zara
Robin / Robyn
Cara
Martha
Petra - like petrified?!
Zoe - too 80s?
Cleo - short for...?
Nia - short for...?

Middle Names
Elizabeth
Lydia
Rosa - like Rose which is v popular esp as MN?
Thora - short for Theodora - too ‘posh’?
Claudia
Coco - short for?
Sophie - DH loves

Robin is a boy's name; use Robyn
Martha is a horrible granny name and I've no idea why it's so popular atm
Zoe is too 80s/90s
Cleo - short for Cleopatra although I think you could use Cleo by itself

For the middle name I would use a family name personally. I don't think popularity matters for middle names. Rose is short and sweet; one syllable is good for a middle name when the surname is double-barrelled.

Dinah

eastcoastmum2014 · 29/03/2019 20:49

We have a double barrelled surname, our DC1 is Emily xx

SomeLikeItTepid · 29/03/2019 20:52

Ooooooh, I LOVE Thora! If I ever plan on having anymore children (unlikely, I'm a haggard mess as it is) this would definitely be on my list.

NC4Now · 29/03/2019 20:56

I think of Biblical names when I think strong, so:

Rachel
Elizabeth
Esther
Martha
Ruth
Leah
Naomi
Sarah

AbeFroman · 29/03/2019 20:58

Astrid
Agatha
Juno
Francis

Jennifer

Hello OP. I have always loved the name Samantha. I have no girls but this is definitely her name should she ever arrive. Smile

RickOShay · 29/03/2019 21:06

Coco could be short for Constance.
Marina is lovely.

differentkindofpenguin · 29/03/2019 21:17

My DD is called Anya, after my granny. Both are incredibly stubborn, strong personalities, with a wicked sense of humour.

pinkpetrol · 29/03/2019 21:18

My name is there. I hated it as a child as I was the only person in my school of 1500 with that name. However as everyone has a younique name now you don't have to worry about that. Call me petrified though and I will defriend you

RickOShay · 29/03/2019 21:26

Grin pink my name is also on the short list! hated it as a child and desperately wanted to be called Becky.
I like it now.

Whoops75 · 29/03/2019 21:36

My ideas
Rhea Sophie
Rhona Sophie

From your list
Lara Elizabeth
Cara Lydia

zen1 · 29/03/2019 21:40

Joan

0hT00dles · 29/03/2019 21:43

Sloane is a strong name that I love. My dd2 was meant to be a Sloane but it just didn’t suit. We have an awkward surname so always have to go with simple but strong first names.

TheRedFox · 29/03/2019 21:43

Thank you @Whoops75

I was worried about too many 'As' if I had a first and middle name ending in A but pleased to see you think this is a possibility as it names ending in A seem to be a common theme for me!

@differentkindofpenguin - I really like Anya but DH not convinced. Typical.

@RickOShay - Constance has been vetoed 🙄

@Heartland3 - Samantha is a no no due to other family names....

Just seen your list further down the thread - funny that I've suggested some that are already on your list!

I see Cleo and Nia as stand alone names.

Love Cleo and Robyn!
