How do you pronounce Ottilie I always think it’s Ott-il-ee but that doesn’t sound very nice and reminds me of otters so I think I must have it wrong.

I knew one once and it's pronounced oh-tilly.

Lovely name btw, but I would assume a French background Grin

Friolero · 24/03/2019 15:44

I would pronounce it Ot-illy. Lovely name.

Bumblebeesmum · 24/03/2019 15:44

I think like otters but not actually met one

PCohle · 24/03/2019 15:46

It reminds me of otters too!

Bellaposey · 24/03/2019 17:08

Ot-illy

CloserIAm2Fine · 24/03/2019 17:28

Ot-illy

There was one on Masterchef recently and that’s how she pronounced it too

I’ve never been a fan of the name tbh, it just doesn’t look or sound very nice to me

StuntCroissant · 24/03/2019 17:33

I know three Ottilies all under 4. They all pronounce it Ott-ill-eee

florascotia2 · 24/03/2019 18:01

In Germany, where the name originated, it's Ott-eel-ee-yuh or Ott-eel-yuh. (It's a version of Odilia, which is a female form of Otto.)

In French, it's Ott-eel-ee. (Though the French versions of the 'root' name , which are Odette (Oh-dett) and Odile (Oh-deel), are traditionally more popular.)

The English language version has until very recently been Ottoline.

I’m not sure why it’s become so popular in recent years, I agree it doesn’t sound particularly nice and makes me think of otters too!

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 24/03/2019 18:05

I've only heard it pronounced as OTT-illie - like Natalie, with a different first syllable. It reminds me of the children's book, The Utterly Otterleys by Mairi Hedderwick.

Supersimpkin · 24/03/2019 18:07

Ottilie try-hard, if you ask me. No one will spell it right.

MollyHuaCha · 24/03/2019 18:12

Love this name. The one I know is pronounced O-till-ee

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 24/03/2019 18:22

I love this name, I always thought it pronounced like ott-illy or in my accent probably closer to otterly Haha. Either way though I think it's really pretty
