Lucia and Thalia are lovely.

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 18/03/2019 23:06

Sienna (too popular?) - really like it Smile
Summer - nah
Amalie - like it but prefer it spelt amelie
Thalia - not keen sorry!
Lucia ( Loo-see-a) - pretty!

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 18/03/2019 23:10

I like Thalia. That's beautiful. Probably my pick of all your options because it's not co.mon but its stunning.

In the states, we pronounce Lucia like Loo-sia. I'm not too familiar with Lu-chia. I'm also not too familiar with people going by their full name instead of Lucy if they are Lucia, Lucille, or Lucinda. I like Lucy but dont care for the full name options!

I love Sienna a lot! I also love Amelie or Amalie. That is going to be my daughter's middle name. Still deciding on spelling as well. I do love the French spelling but my grandma's name is Ama and it's kinda being used as an honor name. These names are really common but it is because they are so stunning!

I also like Summer but I love season names. I also love Autumn and Winter as well ;) I dont think Summer is popular these days so I think its refreshing. Summer Lucille or Summer Amalie sound nice too.

Great list ;)

Sophronia · 18/03/2019 23:11

I love Thalia

Shadow1234 · 19/03/2019 00:13

I really like all your listed names. (and also like Autumn and Winter as well).

Order of preference would be:

Sienna
Summer
Amalie/Amelie
Lucia
Thalia

Other suggestions: Elodie and Willow

SleepingStandingUp · 19/03/2019 00:20

Thalia

HeronLanyon · 19/03/2019 00:22

I love Lucia and have heard both pronunciations. Loo- chee- ah seems much more common here in uk soninagreentherenwkuld be quite a bit of correction going on.
Not too fond of any others in your list. Thalia I like.

manicinsomniac · 19/03/2019 01:16

Sienna - I like it. Everyone says it's popular but I've only ever met one and I've been a teacher for 12 years.

Summer - really like it. But I would worry that my child wouldn't have a very summer personality iyswim.

Amalie - quite like it. Never seen it spelled with an a in the middle

Thalia - would you say it 'Tar-lee-a' or 'Thay-lee-a'. I really like the first but not the second at all - it sounds like failure.

Lucia - it's ok. Probably my least favourite of your list.

Other ideas for modern names:
Amber, Aubrey, Avery, Alyssa, Bailey, Cassidy, Cherry, Devon, Dulcie, Elodie, Eden, Fallon, Genesis, Halle, Hayley, Hadley, Honey, India, Jordan, Jade, Jasmine, Kayla, Kendall, Leonie, Larissa

Thalia is a lovely name, and it's also the most elegant white narcissus

Pemba · 19/03/2019 04:09

Lucia is my favourite, it's lovely. Of course there are multiple pronunciations. Loo-see-a, Lo-thee-a (think that one is maybe Castilian Spanish?), Loo-chee-a (Italian) and not forgetting the English version Loo-sha (as in the Caribbean island). Probably there's others too.

Quite like Amalie and Sienna.

Not that kind on Thalia, maybe because in Estuary English it sounds like 'failure'.

CaitlinsYellowSocks · 19/03/2019 08:43

My favourites are Thalia (I would pronounce it Tah-lee-a - is this correct?) and Lucia.

Amalie I like but I've only ever heard it pronounced A-mah-lee-a, more like Amelia with an "ah" sound than like Amelie.

LucyFox · 19/03/2019 09:41

Sienna - I like it. Not common at all
Summer - no
Amalie - no - it looks like a miss spell & she will constantly be called Amelia
Thalia - i’d consider Talia for less issue with spelling & pronunciation
Lucia - it's ok. I prefer Lucy again because of spelling/pronunciation

Topofthehills · 19/03/2019 09:50

Lucia is my favourite of your list. I would have pronounced it your way unless I knew the person was Italian.

Orangeslemon24 · 19/03/2019 11:48

Thanks for all the positive, constructive feedback. Smile

I love old names

Jennifer

Is my choice

Vestlandet · 19/03/2019 14:02

Sienna - too popular for me
Summer - would be nice but I knew one that was awful so ...
Amalie - very common where I live
Thalia - not sure everyone would pronounce this the same if that’s an issue for you. Also quite popular.
Lucia ( Loo-see-a) - LOVE this name :-)

Chocmallows · 19/03/2019 14:07

Lucia and I assumed you meant Lou-see-a as did not highlight one of the other pronunciations. I live in SW and only met a few Lucias.

TatianaLarina · 19/03/2019 14:33

I think I’d go with Thalia.

Lucia has too many pronunciations to be practical and Lu see a is not the predominant Spanish pronunciation. I prefer the Italian pronunciation anyway.

Orangeslemon24 · 19/03/2019 14:46

Hi,

There seems to be a lot of love for Thalia - a name I have always loved :)

If I like Thalia what other names would you suggest?

OP posts:
elQuintoConyo · 19/03/2019 14:51

Thalia. Like Jenny Thalia? I had a friend at university called Jenny, the rugby team called her Jenny Thalia. Because they were dicks. (genitalia)

TatianaLarina · 19/03/2019 14:55

Amelia, Aurelia, Aurora, Phoebe, Sophia

Sessy19 · 19/03/2019 15:15

I’m coughing up my coffee at the absolute self-assuredness that is so truly mumsnet! OP, please consider this permission to pronounce YOUR CHILD’s NAME however you wish!! 😂😂😂😂😂

Your list isn’t to my taste. But the names are all nice. Summer and Sienna are pretty popular, but still pretty. Quite Americana, so maybe Mia and Willow?

Thalia I DO have a problem with, but that is absolutely my problem. I knew a hideous old lady called Thalia who was just awful, and my ex SIL is Talia. She is also a complete dick 😂😂

I’d pronounce Lucia as Loo-Sha unless prompted otherwise 😉

I appreciate my choices are not to everyone's taste, that's cool HOWEVER I have been taken aback at being educated in a snobby way about pronunciations and what is deemed a modern name.

I appreciate all the great comments and suggestions :)

Hmmm. Possible other names: Aphra, Delia, Hebe, Gaia, Sadie, Thea, Wanda?

MercyBodle · 20/03/2019 03:58

Summer is my easy favourite from your list - love it! 2nd choice is Lucia.
