Madeline, Eden or Evelyn?

Firstly thank you all so much for your help so far! Really helps to get some outside prospective.
Which do you prefer (if any) of these names?

We would like Madeline to be pronounced mada-line as opposed to mada-Lynn. Is there differing ways of spelling these 2 or is it just down to how a person pronounced it?

Thanks guys!!

I think Madeleine would be more likely pronounced the "line" ending you like. I love all 3 names to be honest! I think Madeleine is the least common as I am always meeting little Evie's/Eva's and Eden/Edies - but they are lovely!

PuppyMonkey · 18/03/2019 14:11

Well I think Madeline is much more likely to be pronounced Mada-Lynn, Mada-lun. You could be setting her up for a lifetime if mispronunciations, but hey ho - people learn once you tell them.

RandomMess · 18/03/2019 14:17

It will end up as Maddi at some point, you will get it spelt a few different ways even if they pronounce it the French way that you pronounce it.

Evelyn - can be pronounced Evil Lynne and once that pops into your head it's hard to get out even if you pronounce it Eve Lin you can hear it Confused

MikeUniformMike · 18/03/2019 14:38

Madeline will be Madd-uh-lyn
Eden - no.
Evelyn - I'm not keen on Ever-lyn or Eve-lyn.

AlbertWinestein · 18/03/2019 14:40

Only pick Madeleine if you like Maddie as it’s guaranteed to get shortened at school.

FabulouslyFab · 18/03/2019 14:41

They are all lovely names. My favourite is Madeline and I think as long as you stick to your pronunciation then everyone who matters will catch on.

Icklepup · 18/03/2019 15:09

Eden!

mrsdavys · 18/03/2019 17:09

Madeleine would be Mad-a-lyn because it’s french
Madeline would be Mad-a-line like the film title.

I think Madeline or Madeleine are beautiful whichever pronunciation you choose.
I’d choose that one over the others

Easterbunnyiscomingsoon · 18/03/2019 17:16

I like Eden nn Denni/y

Iwantmychairback · 18/03/2019 17:21

I vote Eden.

Pemba · 18/03/2019 18:45

If you want it pronounced Mad-eh-lyne to rhyme with wine, then yes definitely use the Madeline spelling, as the Madeleine spelling is French and would never be pronounced that way. The Mad-eh-lyn (to rhyme with tin) pronunciation can also be used with your preferred spelling though, so you'll have to make it clear to people which it is.

Madeline is lovely and my favourite, but I do also like Eden and Evelyn (but of course there could also be pronunciation issues with Evelyn).

ilovecheese1 · 18/03/2019 20:51

Thanks all, seems Madeline is the favourite. I have to agree... Will also have to accept it pronounced mada-Lynn I think & also Maddie! Some things to think about..

I like Evelyn but Eden is certainly more unusual and a bit magical which is very cool.

AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 18/03/2019 21:59

Madeline (which I'd pronounce Mada-line, unlike Madeleine which I would say Mada-lane - neither are said anything like Mada-lynn IMO) is head and shoulders above the other two.

Pemba · 20/03/2019 18:36

But Madeleine IS Madda-lynn (or Madda-len) to most people, often Madeline is said this way too.

I have heard of the Madda-lane pronunciation too, but I'd say that's very much in the minority.

ketchupormayo · 20/03/2019 18:42

Eden 😍

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/03/2019 20:19

Eden is gorgeous.
I also like Madeline, but I agree about potential pronunciation problems. Also can't abide Maddie.
Absolutely despise Evelyn, sorry. Its such a serious harsh name. I don't get the hype

MercyBodle · 21/03/2019 04:30

I like both Madeline (just stick to your pronunciation and people will get it) and Eden. I'm not a fan of Evelyn at all. And while to a certain extent Maddy is inevitable, if you stick to saying and writing the full Madeline most people will pick up the cue from you.

MrsWidgerysLodger · 21/03/2019 08:25

Eden! We loved this for DD but unfortunately it sounded clunky with our surname.

jcq17 · 21/03/2019 08:31

Eden there's a million Evelyn's

BlueMerchant · 21/03/2019 08:32

Eden is least popular and the nicest. Madeline is becoming too popular. It's the next Amelie/Amelia imo

aliceelizaloves · 21/03/2019 20:48

Madeleine. I know several Edens, it's sweet but I much prefer it for a boy.
