Skade · 18/03/2019 11:26

Elias was always my favourite but for some reason never named either of my boys that!

AlannaOfTrebond · 18/03/2019 11:39

Off the top of my head, my Greek friends are called:
Spiros
Stavros
Yiannis
Theo (pronounced Tay-o)
Giorgos (pronounced Your-go)
Andreas
Sotiris
Nikos, usually shortened to Nico
Christos
Costa, multiple variations.
Panos
Lucas/Lukas
Thanos
Vasili
Hope some of these help with the inspiration!

Tryphonas
Anastasios
Solonas
Alexandros

RaisedByPuffins · 18/03/2019 13:23

Savva is lovely.

Booboostwo · 18/03/2019 14:15

Do you speak Greek? I only ask because Antoniou is a surname (I can tell from the way it is conjugated). So Antonis Antoniou would be first name, surname.

Don't mean to be a nuisance, but some of the suggestions above are not Greek.
It's Ilias, not Elias
there is no Greek Theo pronounced Tay-o, unless you mean Theos which means god and is not a first name,
Giorgos is not pronounced Your-go,
Nicholaos is shortened to Nicos, Nico is the conjugated form of Nicos,
it's Costas
Vasilis
and Savvas

the conclusion of which is that things may go a bit wrong if you don't have a knowledge of Greek.

Having said that, what Greek names do you like?
Popular ancient Greek names include

Socratis
Aristotelis
Dimosthenis
Aristidis
Periklis
Odyseas
Ektoras
Ionas
Frixos

Very popular modern ones
Nicholaos
Giorgos
Giannis
Christos
Constandinos
Dimitris
Vasilis
Stavros

Other ones:
Andreas
Miltos
Athanasios/Thanos
Charalambos/Babis
Manos

I have run out of relatives and friends at this point!

RayaJambalaya · 18/03/2019 16:19

Aristotle is my fave greek boy name! Love the nn Ari also.

BlueChampagne · 18/03/2019 16:39

Athanasios is my favourite.

AlannaOfTrebond · 18/03/2019 17:35

Booboostwo has made a good point over spelling/correct formal versions of names.

As I don't read Greek, my suggestions are all from speaking to my friends, some may well be diminutives, nicknames or have spelling errors. Totally hold my hands up to Costas for example.

I shall be sure to tell Theo and Giorgos that they are pronouncing their own names wrong though!

BlackPrism · 18/03/2019 18:01

Andreas

happychange · 18/03/2019 18:02

Costas
Alexandros
Antonis
Vasilli
Nicholas
Christos

Westfacing · 18/03/2019 18:11

Aris

Baconislife · 18/03/2019 18:14

Yannis I love this name

pineapplebryanbrown · 18/03/2019 18:18

I knew someone called Yiamandis (can't spell it) that is how it sounded and it means diamond - i thought it was a great name.

Less so Pandolakis.

DharmaInitiativeLady · 18/03/2019 18:19

Athanasios

Booboostwo · 18/03/2019 18:43

AlannaofTrebond sometimes Greek people pronounce their names in a way that has the best hopes of being copied by foreigners rather than the way it is supposed to be pronounced. I have an Ancient Greek name that is very difficult for English speakers so I try to make it a bit easier.

You also get conventional English ways of pronouncing well known Greek names which are different from the actual Greek, e.g.
Aristotelis and Aristotle
Platonas and Plato

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 18/03/2019 18:55

Adonis? Grin

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 18/03/2019 18:59

zen1 · 18/03/2019 19:02

Aeëtes (means eagle)

BillyAndTheSillies · 18/03/2019 19:11

Just going by young family members -
Christos
Dimitri (who shortens to Jimmy which I love)
Michalis
Nicholas
Andreas
Nikolas
Alexander
Christakis
Vyron (my son has the English version of the name which is more recognisable in English)

BillyAndTheSillies · 18/03/2019 19:12

Oh and our top Greek name for the baby we are currently expecting is Ari, but we wouldn't do the full Aristotle.

Charley50 · 18/03/2019 19:12

Anything but Stavros!

Charalambos can be shortened to Charlie. Or Philippos to Phillip or Phil.
I like Yannis and Vassilis.
And surely there are different regional pronunciations in Greece / Cyprus?

Charley50 · 18/03/2019 19:13

I like Georgios too! No idea how to spell it!

QueenofallIsee · 18/03/2019 19:15

Alexis
Stayos
Andrea

Booboostwo · 18/03/2019 20:21

Goodness SmiledWiththeRisingSun, no!

Not Lander, Leandros
Not Leo, Leon
Not Mateo, Mattheos
Not Maximus, at best Maximilianos
Not Miles, I can’t even guess what that one is
Not Moe, you are just trolling now aren’t you?!
And while Neo does mean new, nobody Greek calls their baby that.

Regardless of regional variations, nobody calls their baby God (Theos). The guy is probably called Theodoros, Theodosis, Theologis or similar and is Theo to his english friends.

BlackPrism · 18/03/2019 20:24

@Booboostwo I know a Greek Miles tbh
