The name Bindi is a girl's namemeaning"butterfly". Bindi and is often added to lists like Australian Baby Names: Aussie Favorites. From the experts: In the Noongar language of Western Australia, Bindi means butterfly.

What do you all think? Would it be useable or one of those guilty pleasure names that remains unused? I think it has a nice sound to it. Will look forward to hearing your opinions positive and/or negative.

Are you Noongar?
If not it says "Indian head decoration".

PointlessUsername · 14/03/2019 21:21

I think of hippy parents when i hear it.

Tye dye and bare feet.

dementedpixie · 14/03/2019 21:22

I think of Steve Irwin (the Crocodile Hunter) as that's his daughter's names

SweepTheHalls · 14/03/2019 21:22

Why not Belinda, nickname Bindy?

DramaAlpaca · 14/03/2019 21:22

Steve Irwin's daughter's name.

I'm not keen, tbh.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 14/03/2019 21:25

I mean at least there won’t be any others in her class 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s not bad

AdaColeman · 14/03/2019 21:28

It's what Rolf Harris's daughter is called. I'm not keen, it sound a bit too hippy to me.

TinselAndKnickers · 14/03/2019 21:29

I love it Grin

Wolfiefan · 14/03/2019 21:32

Are you Aussie though? If not I wouldn’t use it.

ShadyLady53 · 14/03/2019 21:33

I'm half asian so tend to think of the decoration a lot of Hindu women wear on their foreheads.

Unless you are Australian, it sounds a bit try-hard and I'd feel a bit sorry for the kid to be honest. Papillion and Mariposa mean butterfly too but I wouldn't be naming a child either of those.

There are better hippy names like Juniper, Juno and Saffron.

kenandbarbie · 14/03/2019 22:16

That's the daughter from the Australian crocodile man that died isn't it?

kenandbarbie · 14/03/2019 22:17

Mariposa would be a cute name!

KinderMalo · 14/03/2019 22:19

I like it but I was also going to suggest Belinda nn Bindi.

Bindi doesn' t seem enough on its own.

EmperorBallpitine · 14/03/2019 22:19

It is totally hippy but I quite like it. Its cute and even if you think its about the jeweled decoration rather than the butterfly meaning, its not a bad reference.

ppee · 14/03/2019 22:23

I love it!

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 14/03/2019 22:24

A bindi is one of those decorated dot things Indian women wear on their foreheads.

Given White Australia’s atrocious track record with aboriginal peoples unless you are one yourself I can’t help but feel this is insensitive cultural appropriation. Other than that, Australia has some of the most barking mad baby names going, I really wouldn’t look at an Aussie baby names list for inspiration.

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/03/2019 22:27

It makes me think of Rolf Harris but if I knew one that wouldn't last long.

Bouchie · 14/03/2019 22:29

dot in forehead worn by hindus and hippies in the 90s.

pinegreen · 14/03/2019 22:30

In Australia, bindis are prickly little plants that grow in your lawn & cause immense pain if you stand on them. It’s a weird name for a kid.

liviii · 14/03/2019 22:37

I have an (Indian) Aunty Bindi- it's short for something not sure what. I like it.

Vanillamanilla1 · 14/03/2019 22:39

I like it

RayaJambalaya · 14/03/2019 22:40

I love Bindi Irwin! Wouldn't use the name myself but I would think it was cute if I met one!

CaptainCabinets · 14/03/2019 22:50

The Australian crocodile man that died Shock

BlackPrism · 14/03/2019 23:58

@SweepTheHalls because Belinda is awful

Tillygetsit · 15/03/2019 00:13

My DH says Belinda makes him think of bell end Hmm Not keen on Bindi. Imagine one at 50.
